The Inner World of the Immigrant Child, was written by the distinguished author and teacher, Dr. Cristina Igoa. The narrative style writing of this text makes it easy to understand as Igoa describes her culturally responsive classrooms and the various students she has encountered over the years as an English Language Learner teacher. Through her story telling, personal interviews, and pictures of student artifacts, Igoa tells the story of the triumphs and struggles immigrant students and English Language Learners encounter when they are uprooted and required to adjust to a new life in a completely different environment. Igoa discusses the various strategies and techniques she has created and implemented into her classroom in order to help culture shocked and non-verbal students express their thoughts and emotions. She often references filmstrips created by students, because those were her most effective method in getting students to share their feelings. Overall, Igoa does and excellent job explaining: the various stages of acculturation children experience, methods to communicate with both students and families, ways to advocate for students who cannot advocate for themselves, classroom modifications that help students adjust to a new setting, and effective ways to teach students at their development and linguistic level.
This compelling book truly exemplifies an ideal ELL classroom. The book itself tells the story of Cristina Igoa’s journey to understand the inner world of immigrant children. Throughout the book, Igoa addressed the effects of uprooting and the phenomenon that results both in the child’s personal life as well as their life at school. Many connections are made to help educators reach increasingly diverse populations of students in meaningful and thoughtful ways. Igoa makes her readers aware that continued work must be done to establish social justice and provide advocacy for those who are routinely marginalized, rejected, and ignored.
This is an excellent research based book that works within the classroom. I have used Dr. Igoa's methods and find progress for immigrant children can be acquired. I highly recommend this for all educators.
