VOYA
Well written and complete, these titles from the Innovations in Science series follow the same format comprised of an overview, chronology, biographical sketches, directory of organizations, suggested works for future reading, Web sites, dictionary of terms and concepts, and appendix. Each overview provides a superb introduction to twentiethcentury advances, offering readers excellent perspective on the great leaps forward in humanity's scientific understanding of the world. The chronologies show how many familiar concepts, such as plate tectonics and amino acids as the building blocks of life, were only recently defined. Biographical sketches offer several paragraphs describing significant contributors to their fields, including photographs of the scientists in action. Biology introduces Theodosius Dobzhansky, the geneticist who established genetics as an independent discipline, and Robert Charles Gallo, the scientist credited with identifying the AIDS virus. The directory of organizations, further reading lists, and listing of Web sites are all annotated listings. The opinionated, but unattributed, comments contain basic details, serving as helpful first stops for sources of additional information. The excellent summaries eliminate some background investigation with Web sites that will need to be updated regularly. The dictionary of terms and concepts, enhanced with illustrations, is accessible. Given the technical nature of some of the biological concepts, it would be helpful to include pronunciations for some terms such as phylogeny and mycorrhka. A few minor changes could make these exceptional reference tools even more effective. A list of illustrations would be more usefulthanthe italicized page numbers buried in the index. Glossary. Index. Illus. Photos. Biblio. Further Reading. Chronology. Appendix. 1999, ABCCLIO, Ages 13 to Adult, 345p. PLB $50. Reviewer: Joyce Yen\
Library Journal
This overview of the advances and developments in biology during the 20th century begins with a 20-page narrative review of the history of biology; the next 40 pages contain a chronological listing of major events in biology, followed by 30 very brief biographical sketches and a list of biology-related organizations and addresses. The first part of this work ends with a list of recommended readings, while the last 184 pages consist of a dictionary of approximately 1200 biological terms and concepts. The descriptions are very brief but well illustrated. While this work succeeds in its purpose as an overview of 20th-century biology and may be useful as an occasional reference tool, much of the information covered is available in current science encyclopedias. Recommended only for libraries wanting a very basic, single-volume summary of contemporary biology.--Eric D. Albright, Duke Medical Ctr. Lib., Durham, NC Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.\
