Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Two or three body parts? Learn about the different characteristics of insects and spider to differentiate the two. Each chapter compares an insect and a spider. Close-up snapshots of the insects and spiders are juxtaposed on the layout. The insects and spiders are identified. Two to three sentences explain the characteristic that is compared. One chapter summarizes all of the comparisons using a dragonfly and garden spider as examples. Informational text features include a vocabulary list after the table of contents. The vocabulary also has a pronunciation guide. Younger children, with the assistance of an adult, may enjoy looking at the photographs and learning how to distinguish insects from spiders. Young readers may enjoy reading the information and examining the pictures; some readers may need guidance and support from an adult to fully comprehend the content of the informational text. For those children to wish to further explore the world of insects and spiders, there is a list of additional resources (books and web sites). This book is from the "Which Animal is Which" series which compares other animals that look alike. The series makes a wonderful addition to a study unit on animals. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
