Overview

American jails and prisons confine nearly 13.5 million people each year, and it is estimated that 6 to 7 percent of the U.S. population will be confined in their lifetimes. Despite these disturbing numbers, little is known about life inside beyond the mythology of popular culture.

Michael G. Santos, a federal prisoner nearing the end of his second decade of continuous confinement, has dedicated the last eighteen years to shedding light on the lives of the men warehoused in the American prison system. Inside: Life Behind Bars in America, his first book for the general public, takes us behind those bars and into the chaos of the cellblock.

Capturing the voices of his fellow prisoners with perfect pitch, Santos makes the tragic—- and at times inspiring—-stories of men from the toughest gang leaders to the richest Wall Street criminals come alive. From drug schemes, murders for hire, and even a prostitution ring that trades on the flesh of female prison guards, this book contains the never-before-seen details of prison life that at last illuminate the varied ways in which men experience life behind bars in America.

An in depth look at author Michael G. Santos life as an inmate in Americas prison system. Convicted of drug trafficking Santos walks you through the harsh realities of prison life. A shocking, truthful look at what an inmate faces each and everyday inside the walls of prison. From interaction with inmates and guards, to assaults, drugs, and prison officials using threats of punishment instead of incentives to maintain prison control. This book is chilling, provocative, and informational, without being a sobbing account of a person having to face the music. Michael G. Santos has captured the raw emotion of a prisoner on the front lines

This man overcomes his 45 yr sentence by education, and by getting graduate degrees. In the mean time, insanity, death, rape, fear, beatings, and a massive drug trade is always exploding all around him as he keeps dodging a bulletsometimes literrally. He tells the stories of certain key players, and other faces just flit in and out setting the scenes. So brtutal, and such courage push in and out against each other, who will win?

I have a relative in prison, so I wanted a book that would give me a feel for what they face everyday. This book gives you a first-hand account of life in prison. Michael Santos was sentenced to over 40 years for cocaine dealing. He has served time in many different types of prisons, from county jails to federal maximum security prisons. It is extremely well-written, though the content is disturbing. If you want an accurate and compelling true story of life behind bars in America, then this is your book.

Excellent book. Mr. Santos provides an excellent picture into life behind bars. Not many of us will be experience this life style but many of us are curious. Micheal paints the perfect portrait of convicts' lifestyles, unmarred by prison administrative politics. Highly recommended.
