Over the past decade, Inside Out and Outside In has become a very important book among mental health practitioners in a variety of disciplines that deal with individuals in their complex social environments. Revised and updated throughout, the third edition builds on this foundation and adds a new chapter on cognitive behavioral theory and practice and a new chapter on relational and intersubjective theories to more fully meet the needs of both students and practitioners today. The third edition of Inside Out and Outside In maintains the book's respectful tone and empathetic voice while making many new additions. The chapter on affective disorders now includes bipolar disorders. Two other chapters update content on psychodynamic theory and race and gender. This edition also offers new research on schizophrenia and personality disorders. Other key updates include linking trauma theory with attachment, as well as attending to client systems, including couples, throughout the book. This new edition further deepens our understanding of the bio-psycho-social contexts in which clinical theory and practice occur, particularly in multicultural settings. It offers ways to clearly understand theories and clinical disorders in their biological and social contexts and provides key updates on new developments in the biopsychosocial domain.

Editorial Reviews

Susanne Bennett
Inside Out and Outside Inis a well-written and conceptually sound book that uses social work examples for treatment and pays close attention to diverse practice populations in a sensitive, culturally-competent manner. Students will find the book accessible and engaging.
Leslie C. Jackson
Inside Out and Outside In uses a biopsychosocial model representing a contemporary perspective that is inclusive of racial cultural and gender contextual theory. The integration of multicultural contexts within a dynamic framework supports a growing awareness of the limitations of using universal perspectives when working with 'difference.' Faculty and students wanting to understand modern psychodynamic theory and practice across various diagnostic domains and multicultural contexts will find this book a valuable resource for their professional development now and in the future.
Carole Tosone
Inside Out and Outside In, the most comprehensive, must-have textbook for all required Human Behavior and Practice courses is even better in its third edition. Kudos to Professors Berzoff, Flanagan, and Hertz for their expanded content and integration of state-of-the art psychodynamic content with rich, detailed case material and applied interventions, a wonderful contribution to the professional social work literature.
Eda G. Goldstein
Berzoff, Flanagan, and Hertz have triumphed once again. Their third edition of Inside Out and Outside In takes a comprehensive and thoughtful look at contemporary psychodynamic theories and their contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic and other common psychopathological conditions. The authors are to be congratulated for their cogent and practice-friendly writing that brings psychodynamic concepts to life and shows their relevance in work with a broad range of culturally diverse clients in today's world. This book promises to be an indispensable resource to students, trainees, beginning practitioners, and supervisors in social work and other mental health disciplines.

    Highly recommended

I am a current graduate student and most of the information I have received regarding various theories related to psychodynamics has been confusing and often leaves one hanging. This book dedicated a lot of time to the various theories that apply to psychodynamics therapy and I found it refreshing to have a text with such comprehensive information.
