In 2007, it's almost expected for young actresses to be multi-media mavens, pursuing stardom not just on the screen but on record, perhaps even on TV and tabloids. The way most teen thrushes do this is by going pop (think Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, etc.) but Emmy Rossum is not just any young actress, a fact that if it isn't borne out by her movie CV -- she was Sean Penn's dead daughter in Mystic River and the lead in Joel Schumacher's version of The Phantom of the Opera -- it surely is by her debut album, Inside Out which is an ocean away from fizzy dance-pop. In its gently swaying melodies and cool textures, Inside Out resembles nothing so much as a teeny version of Watermark, lacking the spooky Celtic overtones of Enya's 1988 masterwork but retaining the same dreamy, shimmering qualities of her music, then marrying that wet, glistening sound to a relatively updated production (mainly heard via skittering electronic rhythms) and lovelorn pop tunes. Naturally, this makes for a much lighter record than Enya's, one that's closer in spirit to an old-fashioned teen-pop record because it's all about love, sweetness, and dreams, and the remarkable thing is that all this earnest adolescence doesn't jar with the ethereal music. Surely it's not nearly as weighty as Watermark or its other close cousin, Milla Jovovich's 1994 cult classic The Divine Comedy, but Rossum's gangly, heartfelt hybrids do feel genuine, as they're as often as awkward as they are polished, with the misfires being as endearing as the successes because they're both sincere. When Inside Out clicks, it's due to Rossum and her collaborator, producer/songwriter Stuart Brawley, crafting this meditative music to sound and play like a pop tune. When it doesn't work, it's nevertheless interesting, the product of a music theater major who writes poetry in her spare time and is committed to her artistic vision, which is certainly many miles away from any of her actress peers. And even if Inside Out isn't your personal cup of tea, it's hard to deny that this is an original, striking debut, proving that not only does Rossum not sound like Lindsay, Paris, Britney etc., but that she has no interest in competing with them at all.

If Emmy didn't write the lyrics for the majority of these songs and was singing someone elses music, this would be a 3 star album. There is no denying that Emmy is a talented singer, but it is quite evident with this album that her singing style and training are the result of theater and / or Opera. This album is relegated to background music after a couple listens, because most of the songs have a similar sound. This is made more Blatent with the voice box Emmy is singing through. The only song that does not sound like it is electronically enhanced is track 11 "Anymore", so it is not ironic that this ended up being my favorite song on the album. All in all I don't regret my purchase, especially at the asking price, but I would have preferred a more Raw sound from the Actress that has the potential of being the modern day "Audrey Hepburn"

Emmy is amazing. She was awesome in Phantom, but this shows her true singing abilities. She does all of the background music in Slow Me Down, so that shows you how great she really is!

Listening to some of the tracks on Youtube, I find that Emmy has done much better here than she did in Phantom. Don't get me wrong, she was good in the movie, but as a purist, I prefer the musical version and think she could have done better and all... but this is really good! I love her voice a lot, though there seems to be a lot of computer stuff in it... it's soothing and all...

It seems that Emmy Rossum has found a way to be successful with her breathy, lack-luster vocals: sing into a microphone, then run that sound through the computer, make every note pitch-perfect, and then release an album that sounds like every Enya CD you've ever heard. It seems her whispy, fragile voice has not grown at all since her wretched singing of Phantom of the Opera. I'm baffled by some of the reviewers below who say this is "true" singing. Being engineered within an inch of your life is hardly "true," let alone singing. Phantom was a much better example of Rossum's true voice. All that being said, if you are a fan of this particular genre of music, you will most certainly enjoy this CD. The tracks are extemely well-engineered--as I've said--and the tunes are catchy enough to enjoy, but unobtrusive enough to serve as background music for casual dinner parties. If you enjoyed Ms. Rossum in Phantom, I would suggest listening to Sarah Brightman and from there give Nicole Cabell a try and then dive in to the wonderful world of Renee Fleming...her's is a true soprano voice.

This album really surprised me. The first time I listened to it I must admit I was a bit on the edge of disliking it. Emmy's voice is very different and very unique. It really takes three or four listens to really understand the richness of her music. It's something completely different and very interesting once you find yourself enjoying it. It took me about five listens to enjoy the album as a whole. I have to say my favorite tracks are: Anymore, Don't Stop Now, and High. All of the songs have something different to offer. I'm not as big a fan of Slow me Down as some people are, but the CD is very good. Very enjoyable and relaxing. It can really fade into the background, but at the same time it has punch. Very cool. Great addition to any CD collection.

I love the vocal qualities and the instrumentation. The only downside for me is that most of the songs feel the same....but if you want soothing music to decompress you'll enjoy this CD

I was anxious to purchase and listen to this CD. I found myself tired and bored with the likeness of the format in each song. The CD missed the mark for me. Emmy's voice is so much better than this format allowed. I would not recommend this CD.

Emmy Rossums new CD "Inside Out" is outstanding. Look out Celine, Christina, and Imogon, because Rossum is truly the best vocal artist of 2007.

This is an amazing album from start to finish. Emmy's voice is so unique, the lyrics are well written and the music is beautiful. This album is a must for any CD collection.

With this CD, I was a little skeptical about how it would end up sounding. But, now that I've played it in my store, I was plesantly surprised at how good it sounded. Rossum shows off her unique vocals very well on this album, and I would recommend this to everyone that comes in our store.

Emmy Rossum is one of my favorite actresses/singers. For those of you not familiar with her work, you may recognize her from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera." Rossum truly has a gift and puts her voice to the test on this very creative and original album. All vocals on every tract were performed and produced by Rossum. There are few instruments used on the tracks, but her vocal range creates its own orchestra of ethereal sounds.

if you read up on the subject before writing away, you would know that the song "slow me down" is NOT computer generated, its her voice in diff. various keys, she has stated in many many interviews her voice in about 100 layers, it has no track it's just her voice, that's what makes it special, and it's NOT supposed to sound like enya, I love enya but this isnt it, she is her own person, and this is her style not to be compared with something completley diff.

I really liked Emmy in Phantom of the Opera, but this CD is a bit of a let-down. I don't really get all the comparisons to Enya - this is way more synthesized then Enya, who I happen to like every once in a while. After the first song on this CD, I just got bored. It all sounds the same and I just think she could have done so much better with another style. Maybe she'll try something different next time and it will be better... I'm keeping my fingers crossed, anyway.

I personally LOVED her new CD. Everyone should listen to it because this CD has shown another side of Emmy's great vioce. It might take one a little time to get use to it bit once u start listening to it it is hard to stop. IT'S ADDICTING.

An amazing debut from the superbly talented singer/actress! For me it runs more along the lines of Enya, but with more of a pop twist to the compositions. Emmy really utilizes her voice AS an instrument, with effectively layered vocals pefectly blending with the combonation of pad keyboard, piano, subtle drum rythmns, bass and a smattering of guitar and violins. It all blends together to form the woderfully atmospheric feel to the CD. Also effective is the raw emotion of each song. I could really FEEL what she was singing about, and there was nothing cliche about the themes of love, loss, and life Emmy addresses. While these may be common themes overall in music, Emmy treats them on a personal level that I know I could identify with. The whole CD is solid, I love every track, but highlights for me were "High", "Inside Out", "The Great Divide", "Lullaby", and the iTunes exclusive, "Been Too Long". Everyone has their opinion, but I must confess I am not sure what people were looking for or wanting who were disappointed in this effort. Emmy's selfless transparency and angelic voice delivered everything I came to expect from this debut and then some!

I could see what a lot of reviewers mean by their critiques, and I would actually agree in that sense. Her belting style for being so young is just phenomenal, so why she needed to add computers for the mechanical sound, I'm not really sure. But it could be that was what she was going for with sort of the "new agey" feel, rather than the same old recycled pop garbage we hear time in, time out. Everytime I've played her in the store, I've gotten good compliments. So it has definitely been nice to get something new in comparison to the things that the store has received in the past that always seem to sound the same!

Emmy Rossum was a haunting and beautiful Christine. One can not afford to compare her to other Christines. She did a unique, sweetly innocent,memorable take. This new CD was a risk and she took it with a full heart and rich talent. Those who strike down this touching,maturing voice, just settle back and watch this songbird fly. Her future in music,film,and theatre is assured! More memories we will love are to come!

I became a big Emmy fan after watching her in the Phantom. Now that she is releasing her own CD, I am even more so. The songs that I have heard thus far have been very enjoyable, and I am very excited about this Cd. I cannot wait until it is released so that I can hear them all!
