Overview

"Mark Tewksbury faced all the challenges of a high-performance athlete - the discipline, sacrifices, intense pressure, and post-Olympic transition. But he also had to overcome the difficult personal challenge of coming out as a gay man - first to his family and confidants, and then ultimately under the spotlight of the public eye. Tewksbury's intense feeling of difference early in life paints a poignant and unique portrait of a complex individual." Overview

Tewksbury's intense feeling of difference early in life paints a poignant and unique portrait of a complex individual." "Once the elite athlete, now an accomplished and natural storyteller, Tewksbury uses his own story - public and private - to offer an insight into the worlds of Olympic politics, media, fame, gay life, and sport leadership. He takes us from growing up gay in conservative western Canada, through the pain of keeping his true self a secret even as he was feted on the world stage, and ultimately to coming out, being able to live his whole life to the fullest, and to make a difference in life." More than one man's story, Inside Out is an inspiration for anyone facing a personal conflict, revealing that the most insurmountable challenges can be transformed into the ultimate triumph of a full life worth living.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
In public, Mark Tewksbury has always credited the 1976 Olympics as a major inspiration for his becoming an Olympic champion swimmer, but in fact, it was wearing a towel-turban in imitation of his grandmother and swimming in her condo pool that first sparked his love of swimming. Intimate and endearing details such as these are what provide Tewksbury's story with relevance beyond the famous-athlete-fights-and-overcomes-his-personal-demons story. Granted, Tewksbury covers all the usual challenges faced by performance athletes-the sacrifices, the post-Olympic depression, the intense glare of the media spotlight-but it is his private sojourn as a gay man, from coming out of the closet to visiting his first gay bar ("it was like being in another world with fashionably dressed people drinking cocktails from martini glasses") to entering his first sexual relationship (an ongoing, three-way relationship with a male couple) that will resonate with the reader. Despite the "Gay Jock" subtitle, the book is accessible; Tewksbury comes with all the tics and quirks of your everyday gay man wrestling with his sexuality, and later, with the complexities of finding a partner and dating. A thoughtful, moving narrative that inspires as much as it entertains. (Publishers Weekly, April 10, 2006)
