Seasoned public library managers might be tempted to dismiss this book, thinking that they are already well versed in many of its topics (such as performing a needs assessment, developing a strategic plan, and marketing and evaluating services). That would be a big mistake. For what Hill (director of community services, WebJunction) offers is nothing less than a holistic vision for public libraries in the United States, centered on the library's ability to create community. She adroitly draws on scholarship and research, examples and interviews, to create a plan for libraries that is as sharply focused as it is quietly urgent. By succeeding even more as community builders, libraries, Hill believes, can become sustainable—meaning that the public can't live without them. Public librarians would do well to use this book as a roadmap, at least for the next decade.—BK

The process of community building in libraries using research-based assertions and practical examples is explored in this text. The author begins with the premise that a number of developments in recent years— including social science research, particularly on the notion of social capital, the Gates Foundation work to help libraries deliver public-access computing, and the developments in social computing forged by Web 2.0 technologies—have emerged to underscore the importance of libraries continuing to strive to create and strengthen community in order to be more effective, vibrant, and sustainable institutions. Hill argues that successful community building in libraries addresses five common practices, which are to assess, deliver, engage, iterate, and sustain. Chapters devoted to each of these areas include brief anecdotes from practitioners about how these principles are being used within their institutions. Guiding questions, research-based information, and examples from the field give each chapter a philosophical basis as well as a practical approach. Focused mostly on public libraries, the ideas and processes presented within the text are applicable for libraries of any type. In accessible ways replete with examples, the author lays a solid foundation for each of the highlighted areas including needs assessments, service offerings, communicating with users, evaluation, and building libraries for the future. Librarians will find this book inspiring and practical. Readers will begin to plan ways in which to act to strengthen the library community within their own institutions as they turn the pages.
