Meet the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt.  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears."

Stan and Jan planned all of their books together. They both wrote the stories and created the pictures.  They continued to live outside of Philadelphia in the country.  There are now over 300 Berenstain Bears books.

Both of my little girls loved this book, starting at about 18-months of age. This condensed board book version was their first introduction to the Berenstain Bears. It is a great fast read, and always had them saying "again, again." When the box with brother bear falls of the truck my 23-month-old always says 'uh-oh, off, off.' This book helps with concepts of on, off, inside, outside. To carry the fun further, we put my little girl in a box her size and emphasized the concepts of inside, outside etc just like the book. The next BB book they sat through after this title was 'That Stump Must Go.' That title can be hard to find sometimes. We have checked it out repeatedly from our local library.

This was a favorite of each of my six children when they were toddlers. It was the first book they learned to "read" because they could tell the story from the pictures, giggling all the way through! Now I am getting this book for grandchildren, who love it just as much. The cover has changed slightly, but inside the beloved classic remains the same!

My boy was 3 years old when we had Parents as Teachers visit. And out Mrs Julie braught this book to read to my son. My 3 year old asked her to read it at least 5 times in a row. After that we HAD to go to the book store and get it. He is 4 years old now and still talks about this book with love. This will be his all time favorite!
