Children's Literature - Gail C. Krause
Fifteen-year-old Rex Jones bought a new cell phone. It was unusual because it had two extra buttons. One read, "Explore" and the other read, "Return." When they flashed Rex had to push them. One day the red "Explore" button flashed as Rex and his buddies Carl and Dave were in Chemistry class. Pushing the button all three boys were transported to a racetrack with a shiny red racing car they were instructed to get in. As they did, a young girl tried to stop them. But the excitement was overwhelming and the boys strapped in, donned helmets and were off. Rex realized they weren't in any car race. They had been transported into Motor Speed Chase, the computer game he and his buds played constantly. As the speedometer rose to 170 miles an hour, Rex noticed the girl again, standing in the middle of the racetrack with a sign in her hand. At the last minute she jumped out of the way, and as they whizzed by her in the red speedster, Dave read the sign she was holding. It warned them of the danger they were in by racing this particular car in this particular race. The danger was Jerry Drag, a new race driver who played dirty and was not beyond smashing into opponents so he would win. How will it all work out, kids will have to read to find out the real twist at the end.
