...amazingly detailed and dramatic, and informative and interesting...
From The Critics
Computer generated graphics are employed to visually tell the tale of the luxury airship "Hindenburg" and its fiery end in 1937. The story is told with the aid of two young passengers on the last flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Lakehurst, New Jersey. A four-page foldout portrays the Hindenburg in flight and shows its internal structure. Consider this spectacular and highly informative book as a gift for any child interested in flight, machines, or awesome events. 2000, Little, Brown and Company, $18.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: M. Henebry SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
Children's Literature
The largest of its kind, this zeppelin once let people travel from Germany to the United States in three days. Almost as big as the Titanic, the Hindenburg zeppelin reigned as a grand example of science and travel. Yet, in an instant, the great airship would be no more. A marvel to behold, only 78.5 feet shorter than the 882.5 foot Titanic, the Hindenburg floated on air instead of water. Mireille Majoor uses a biographical account and timeline to document the Hindenburg's fateful three-day journey to the United States. Through numerous, detailed illustrations by Ken Marschall and various photographs and a large tri-fold cutaway, the reader is provided with the history of the Hindenburg and its inner workings. The comparative and cutaway illustrations make this a very useful book in the classroom. One problem is that the author states, "No airplane yet built could fly across the ocean without stopping and a voyage by ocean liner would have taken at least two weeks." This statement ignores Charles Lindbergh's nonstop flight in 1927, and infers that airplanes could not then cross the Atlantic. Over all, this is a satisfactory book, suitable as an introduction to this historic machine. 2000, Madison Press/Little Brown, . Ages 5 to 10. Reviewer: John D. Orsborn
School Library Journal
Gr 3-8-A look at the luxury airship and its infamous disaster of 1937. A fictionalized narrative of the voyage of two young people who were on board provides a serviceable story, but it is the illustrations-which include pictures of artifacts and a rare color photo of the crash scene-that are the draw here. Marschall's large-scale art is historically and technically accurate, amazingly detailed and dramatic, and informative and interesting. It succeeds in conveying the scope of both the airship's size and demise, featuring a foldout quadruple-page spread. Students will be able to tour the inside of the engine room, walk the catwalk beneath the gasbags and girders, and take a shower or play the baby grand piano in the passenger areas. The artist's talent allows for views of all of this, and the perspectives are fantastic. When the destructive flames begin, readers will almost be able to feel and hear them. For the in-depth picture, pair this with some of the other recent titles on this topic such as Patrick O'Brien's The Hindenburg (Holt, 2000) for younger readers, and Gina De Angelis's The Hindenburg (Chelsea, 2000) for older readers.-Andrew Medlar, Chicago Public Library, IL Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
