From The CriticsReviewer: Reggie Matias, Jr., PhD (DePaul University)
Description: This book provides students with information about the process of obtaining graduate training in clinical psychology.
Purpose: The purpose is to help students understand the process of applying to graduate school in clinical psychology. The authors provide an overview of the field of clinical psychology as well as tips on how and why one applies to a particular program, how to master the interview, and suggestions for making final decisions about a program. This is a timely book given that clinical psychology is becoming increasingly attractive to students as an undergraduate major and as a career.
Audience: The book is written for undergraduates, BA level students who are taking time off from school following graduation, and master's level students contemplating continuing with their training. The authors are credible authorities in this area. A strength is that two of the authors have primary appointments in academic psychology departments.
Features: Although the tables are informative, I suspect that graphic representation (e.g., charts and plots) rather than tables of text might have been more effective. The authors make good use of the recent surveys of clinical training programs and provide sample letters that readers will find useful. Moreover, the book is well organized and easy to read. Students should have no difficulty comparing clinical training program along the dimensions specified in the section on "reports on individual programs.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for undergraduates, recent graduates, and master's level students contemplating applying to clinical psychology programs. The guide provides a nice balance between conceptualizing the application process and offering concrete advice on specific issues. The authors are faithful to the title; this is truly an "insiders guide" to graduate programs in clinical psychology. I wish I had this resource book available to me when I was applying to graduate school!
