Overview

The United Nations increasingly finds itself at the center of world events in an age of rapid globalization. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we understand its structure and functions. In this highly readable book, a prominent news correspondent at the UN provides a colorful introduction to its activities and goals.
UN correspondent Linda Fasulo draws on her own observations as well as on the insights of other individuals who have been active in the UN, including US ambassadors Richard Holbrooke, Madeleine Albright, and John Negroponte. She explains how the UN came into existence, what governing principles guide its operation, and what it is like to be a participant. She describes the organization, responsibilities, and often-tense politics of the Security Council. Surveying the many humanitarian, crime-fighting, and peacekeeping programs of the UN, Fasulo concludes that there are important reasons for Americans to give the United Nations their support.

    Read this book.

No writer until now has written about the inside of the UN. The author of the book, Linda Fasulo, came up with the idea to tell the world about what is really going on in the United Nations. Most people don't know much about this large, mysterious world organziation. This book gives wonderful information. The author should be congratulated.

    Clear and comprehensive

This book is great: a lucid and entertaining account of the United Nations. It's impressive that Fasulo is able to explain the functionings of such a large (and some would argue convoluted) organization with such clarity. The text is spry, and it's clear that the author has had a lot of experience as an independent chronicler of the organization. The text covers the history of the United Nations as well as recent and relevant topics such as climate change and the election of Barack Obama. The numerous candid accounts from diplomats, observers, supporters, and critics alike made me really feel like I was an "insider." A very fresh and smart book.
