Writing a decent guide for a city so spread out may be an imposs

Writing a decent guide for a city so spread out may be an impossible task, and I applaud the effort that clearly went into this book. However, this book has proven itself to be almost entirely useless.

Firstly, it includes such little local treasures as Brugger's Bagels and Chuck E Cheese. National chains, in my opinion, don't belong in books of this type.

Second, the scant treatment of truly local businesses is cursory at best, and quickly takes the author out of her depth. The author provides glowing reviews of actually quite mediocre shops and restaurants, and very few of them. If you don't happen to share the author's opinion, there's nothing else to go on. This ends up being Hobson's choice of what is actually quite a diverse marketplace. The space wasted on national chains could certainly have been better used giving the reader a broader range of genuinely local information.

Third, the book seems entirely too focused on food. The author is a food critic and that is certainly what you get out of this book. In between meals, however, you may find yourself a bit stuck for things to actually do.

Other books in the Insider's Guide series are much better written and enormously useful, so I was quite disappointed. The Tucson guide unfortunately seems to be one of those guidebooks that you see everywhere not because everyone wants it, but because most people who buy it try to get rid of it.
