From the Barenaked Ladies to the Goo Goo Dolls to Toad the Wet Sprocket to the Rembrandts, Gavin MacKillop is a producer/engineer who has shown a fondness for the more melodic, hooky, tuneful bands in alternative pop

From the Barenaked Ladies to the Goo Goo Dolls to Toad the Wet Sprocket to the Rembrandts, Gavin MacKillop is a producer/engineer who has shown a fondness for the more melodic, hooky, tuneful bands in alternative pop
ock. An album that MacKillop produces or engineers won't necessarily fit that description, but there is a good possibility that it will -- and the Miggs' second album, Insomnia, won't hurt MacKillop's reputation for embracing the melodic, hooky, tuneful side of alternative pop
ock. This is alternative pop
ock that has a lot of power pop and arena rock appeal -- nothing abstract, dissonant, or angular takes place -- and the Miggs have an attractive, easily likable sound that draws on alternative influences such as the Replacements, R.E.M., Live, and the abovementioned Goo Goo Dolls. In other words, the Miggs are very much the sort of band one would expect MacKillop to produce given his history. Nothing groundbreaking occurs on Insomnia, but the Northern Californians' material is solid, well constructed, accessible, and very easy to absorb. If Insomnia is mildly derivative, it certainly isn't derivative in a negative way -- and while the Miggs won't win any awards for being the most innovative band of the 2000s, they deliver the goods when it comes to expressive lead vocals which are provided by frontman/songwriter Don Miggs, quality, and craftsmanship. This is a memorable CD that both the Miggs and MacKillop should be glad to have on their résumés.

    not too shabby

The tunes are catchy as all hell, and the guys perform with all the fervor of Orange County girls trying out for cheerleading (in the good sense, of course). The lyrics are good, too. Via the catchy as hell tunes, they manage to sneak in some wonderfully suggestive lyrics about glasses half-full of piss and the romantic dilemmas of the modern everyman. My favorite combination of lyric and music resides within "Saint Rita." This song's opening lyrics boldly proclaim: "I won't run away won't stand down" while a driving bass-drum-guitar combination begs you to do so with the shear sense of mania this auditory assault creates. Okay, maybe that's sounds a bit cliche, but it's true. Besides, who amongst us has never been in that kind of relationship? Overall, Miggs put togehter a good CD. Innovative? Maybe not, but who ever said that every piece of music you ever hear has to be some new ground-breaking something or the other? I often think that we, as music lovers, have become all too jaded. Instead of looking for innovative, look for good. Miggs is good. See them live and you'll have a good time. And, since the tunes are catchy as hell, there is a good chance that there'll be plenty of ladies in the crowd because we like catchy as hell tunes that are performed by attractive guys and that we can dance to. So there.

    Amazing stuff...

This new album is awesome! It sounds really great. The vocals, drums, guitar, and bass are all excellent, and the sound from each is very well balanced. In all honesty I really can't pick just one, as a favorite, because I love them all. Really. I leave the album playing and don't skip songs.. I have also seen a few of your shows also and you are even better live. You guys rock!

    uniquely wonderful sound!

this album is has a wonderful mix of songs. poppier ones like 'everything is fine' more rockish like 'st. rita' with one beautiful acoustic titled 'maybe'. don's voice is beautiful and the harmonies between him and the rest of miggs are awesome. rarely do i find a band with talented musicians who ALL sing so well together. these guys are wonderful musicians, you will not be dissapointed by this album.
