Dookie gave Green Day success, but it was never really clear whether they wanted it in the first place. However, given the incessantly catchy songwriting of Billie Joe, the success made sense. Green Day were traditionalists without realizing it, learning all of their tricks through secondhand records and second-generation California punk bands. They didn't change their sound in the slightest after signing to a major label, which meant that they couldn't revert back to a harsher, earlier sound as a way to shed their audience for Dookie's follow-up, Insomniac. Instead, they kept their blueprint and made it a shade darker. Throughout Insomniac, there are vague references to the band's startling multi-platinum breakthrough, but the album is hardly a stark confessional on the level of Nirvana's In Utero. It's a collection of speedy, catchy songs in the spirit of the Buzzcocks, the Jam, the Clash, and the Undertones, but played with more minor chords and less melody and recorded with a bigger, hard rock-oriented production. While nothing on the album is as immediate as "Basket Case" or "Longview," the band has gained a powerful sonic punch, which goes straight for the gut but sacrifices the raw edge they so desperately want to keep and makes the record slightly tame. Billie Joe hasn't lost much of his talent for simple, tuneful hooks, but after a series of songs that all sound pretty much the same, it becomes clear that he needs to push himself a little bit more if Green Day ever want to be something more than a good punk-pop band. As it is, they remain a good punk-pop band, and Insomniac is a good punk-pop record, but nothing more.

    Amazingly Enjoyable and Fast

Green Day is known for good stuff...and they didn't miss the mark here. The frantic guitar melodies, crazy drum, and awesome punky vocals will have you banging your head in enjoyment...also, the lyrics never get pointless. Good job!

    So cool!

Insomniac is such a cool cd! There's really no other way to describe it.It's really awesome and I dont understand why reviewers make it sound lousy compared to Dookie. This is essential for your Green Day collection(believe me from experience). If you decide not to get this, your're missing alot of great music from green day! Buy it now!

    Really good

Im listening to it now. It is so much better then Dookie in my opinion and it sounds closer to American Idiot then Dookie or Warning

    Stef, a chick, a drummer, a punk

Insomniac...it's a shame that it is compared to the infamous Dookie all the time. It's not that I dont like Dookie, it's that I think Insomniac is pure punk and pure platinum. In my opinion I like Insomniac better because they rock a little harder. I really enjoy it! I know it's knida cliche` but I especially like 'Geek Stink Breath' and 'Brainstew/Jaded' like everyone else. I highly recommend it.

    This album is underrated

This ablum is underrated because everyone compares it to Dookie. If Dookie never came out this would be Green Day's go to album. Until Nimrod would have came out. But still this is a very good album. It features big MTV hits like ''Geek Stink Breath'', ''Stuck With Me'', ''Brain Stew/Jaded'', & ''Walking Contradiction''. Also great tunes like ''Armatage Shanks'' & ''Tight Wad Hill''.

    Highly Underrated

In my opinion Insomniac is a lot better album than reviewers admit. Admittedly it is darker than some of Green Day's earlier offerings, but I still find this album easy on the ears. The songs are very catchy and the sound has a lot of substance and dimension. Definitely worth a listen, especially if you are already interested in Green Day.

This CD kicks Major....well, you know what I mean!

I think that anyone who enjoys the sound of Green day should buy this CD. Green Day has a kick in teh pants sound to it that seperates themselves from everything else. A must-buy.

What punk is suppose to be

Insomniac is one of the most UNDERRATED albums ever made. This follow-up to ''Dookie'' never hit home because most people were shaken by the reality that Green Day song writer Billie Joe wrote songs that actually MEAN SOMETHING. This album was written by BJ while he was up all night tending to his kid, (i.e. the title). I highly reccomend this album to any Green Day or punk fan, I own over 100 punk Cds and all of Green Day's and this is my favorite overall CD.
