Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
Leslie Sills is the author of an exceptionally well-produced series on women artists. The biographies contain first-rate, full-color reproductions, black-and-white illustrations and photographs written in a simple, conversational style that vivifies the artists and their works. Each of Ms. Sills two volumes focus on a quartet of artists: O'Keeffe, Kahlo, Ringgold and Neel in Inspirations and Cassatt, Saar, Carrington and Frank in Visions. Both contain bibliographies for further reading about each woman.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Wonderful stories about the lives of Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Alice Neel, and Faith Ringgold lavishly illustrated with full color reproductions of their works should inspire budding artists. O'Keeffe paints images from the New Mexican high desert while Kahlo depicts images from Mexico, Neel provides the reader with her rough expressionist portraits, while Ringgold paints images of the black people and their Harlem community. 1990 Notable Children's Book.
School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up The colorful artwork immediately engages the attention of anyone browsing through this collective biography. O'Keefe's arresting flower studies; Frida Kahlo's naive and symbolic self-portraits; Alice Neel's intense, sad-eyed children; and Faith Ringgold's intricate cloth pictures are marvelously reproduced. Sills' text lives up to the promise of the pictures. Her focus is not so much on the lives of these artists as on their art and the intensity of their vision. Enough is told of marriages and deaths, of family and education, to explain how each was influenced in the direction that she chose and why each was so deeply committed to the world of art. The selection of these four women, and the excellent quality of both the text and the art reproductions, result in a book which brings an enhanced understanding of contemporary art and an appreciation of the importance of women in modern art. Each of these women has achieved recognition and fame and each deserves to be introduced to young artists and readers. This book should be put in the hands of as many young people as possible.
