Overview

When the President of the United States falls victim to a weaponized and contagious strain of a genetic disease—one that kills its victims without warning or symptom—Special Forces commander Jack “King” Sigler is on the case. He and his team of highly trained operators have been assigned to protect a CDC detective as she journeys to the source of the new strain: Vietnam’s Annamite Mountains.

Surrounded by old landmines, harsh jungle terrain, and more than one military force not happy about the return of American boots to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, the fight for survival becomes a grueling battle. Pursued by VPLA Death Volunteers, Vietnam’s Special Forces unit, the team’s flight through a maze of archaic ruins reveals an ancient secret that may stop the disease from sweeping the globe—even as it threatens both the mission and their lives…

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Robinson’s slam-bang second Chess Team thriller (after Pulse) opens in 1995 in Vietnam’s Annamite Mountains, where Dr. Anthony Weston, a cryptozoologist, is studying a strange tribe of protohumans. When a pack of the creatures attacks Weston, one of them decides he’d make a tasty snack (“he could taste the decaying flesh of some previous meal that clung to its two-inch-long canines”). Fourteen years later, Jack Sigler, head of the elite Chess Team, is searching for the source of a deadly plague known as the Brugada syndrome, which has stricken the new U.S. president. Jack (call sign “King”) and his team members—Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, Pawn—are soon in Vietnam on the trail of a cure. There they find a vast mountain hideout with a city built of bones. Robinson, who’s been criticized for writing stories that are too much like video games, has come up with a wildly inventive yarn that reads as well on the page as it would play on a computer screen. Chess Team is Back and Better than Ever!

Jeremy Robinson is one of those authors who, simply put, writes books I want to read, and Instinct is no exception. Instinct includes just about all the things I enjoy in a thriller: an exotic setting, a compelling mystery, creepy creatures, suspense, and action galore! Pulse was good, but Instinct is better. Chess Team is carving out a niche for itself alongside the likes of the Event Group, Sigma Force, and NUMA. If you like James Rollins, Michael Crichton, or Matthew Reilly, give Robinson a try. You won't regret it.

    Good read

Like Robison's other books, this storyweaves an exiting adventure story with an ancient myth causing the lines between fact and fiction to blur.

Plenty of action, poor on plot

Jeremy Robinson has once again given us a storyline packed with action and adventure. Mr. Robinson definitely does his homework when it comes to all the techno-science included in his works. Most readers will find this novel exciting and entertaining, as did I. I was however, a bit disappointed in the ending, which failed to explain in detail why the assassination attempt was carried out in the first place. To me, the fact that the president was a past Delta, simply was not enough explanation. All in all, a fun read.

    PACKED WITH ACTION!

I am now officially a Jeremy Robinson addict! I started first with " Torment" and have just finished reading two of the CHESS TEAM novels, the last being INSTINCT. I couldn't put it down. I love the Chess Team characters and the fast-paced way Robinson keeps readers on their toes, dying to find out what will happen next. EXCELLENT read.

    Robinson does it again!

Another non-stop action thriller by Jeremy Robinson. This book will have you flipping through pages as you yearn to know what's next! The Chess Team heads out on the second adventure of the series and what's best is the continuity between this, and the first PULSE. A must-read!

    OUTSTANDING WORK!

Jeremy Robinson is one of my favorite authors...and here is a prime example of why! Full of action and adventure that will not stop! Makes you want to read all of his work!! His style fits right in with Rollins and Crichton, to name a few, with twist and turns throughout! You won't be sorry you picked it up!

    Loved it!

I really enjoyed Pulse when I read it. Had a very Clive Cussler historical twist, but was also very much its own thing. The follow up, Instinct, is even better. Lots of things going on, yet never muddled or bogged down by parallel story lines. I found it to be extremely entertaining and fun to read, which really is the reason I pick up books to begin with.

If you enjoyed Pulse, you should like this one even more. None of the characters get away without some damage... and that always adds to the tension of the story. If you know that the main characters will never be in any significant danger, it takes away from the drama of the action.

Go get a copy today and have a blast reading it.

    Instinct by Jeremy Robinson

Instinct is book two in the Chess Team series by Jeremy Robinson. And it was a book I read in a weekend because I found it nearly impossible to put down. The action and suspense keep the pages flying by. The story takes turn after turn as the team struggles with a mission that could alter the course of human evolution forever.

An assassination attempt is made on the President of the United States. But its not the sort of attempt that a Secret Service Agent can throw himself on top of. This plot is viral. One of the viruses unique properties is that it only infects men, but does so at a genetic level. And once infected, it is 100% fatal. While the American government struggles to contain the contamination, and works to hide it from the American people, the Chess Team is sent to Vietnam's Annamite mountain range to track down a cure.

Along the way, they discover the origin of the virus as well as who has weaponized it. The team also discover an Anthropologist who has been lost in the jungles of Vietnam since 1995. And while the Chess Team struggles to discover the cure, they find a lost race of savage creatures that may challenge man's claim as the dominant species on the planet.

Instinct is a powerful followup to Pulse, the initial book in series. This book is as exciting as it is creative. The Chess Team characters grow and evolve as Robinson does a masterful job of adding depth to each team member as they each face personal challenges. The conclusion of the book is satisfying and complete but sets up a story that will launch directly into book three, already in the works.

Readers interested in action, suspense, and credible sci-fi will find all of it and more in the Chess Team series.
