Overview

A charming, unique confession of one man's radical transformation through eating exclusively whole raw foods. Zephyr delves boldly into the organismic core of our relationship with food, unearthing a diet that is profoundly pleasurable, truly healthy, and utterly ecological. He completes his vision by integrating instinctive eating with permaculture and tribal community. Instructive, inspirational, idealistic, yet clearly practical. It is the only book by an American author about the newly rediscovered practice of Instinctive Eating.

Editorial Reviews

Karen Waymire
A truly entertaining, sensual, educational and vivid/graphic account of one mans awakening to a new paradigm of the eating ritual. Instinctive Eating: The Lost Knowledge of Optimum Nutrition entices the reader with alluring descriptions of how to select raw, whole organic foods, using primal memory and sensual attraction. It resonates with our thirst for freedom and simplicity!
Foraging instinctively, I realized that there is a certain nurturing that I was extremely deficient in that could only be found from intimacy with trees and plants. I rediscovered a lost and vital channel of love, intimacy, and sensual nourishment: a bottomless void was at long last being filled by live food and foraging.
Zephyr, the inspired author of Instinctive Eating, has reintroduced this system first initiated by Guy-Claude Burger in France 30 years ago. The input from Burger and Instinctive Nutrition, by Severen Schaeffer, encouraged Zephyr to join Pangaia (a small rual permaculture* community near Pahoa, Hawaii). It is in this environment that he has experienced the overwhelmingly healing effects of returning to this way of being. A delicious reading experience!
*Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way.

An intensely first-person account of one instincto's journey, parts of which may baffle (shock?) vegetarian readers, but there is no question of the environmental sensitivity of the author, or his commitment to a sustainable lifestyle. Written in alively, generous style which drips with Zephyr's honesty and integrity. Not just instinctive nutrition, but the author's take on instinctive living as well. Must reading.

If you have ever swiped a sweet sapote, marauded the meat of mangos, or pilfered a pack of papayas, check it out. Zephyr, master forager and brilliant communicator, creates an inspiring "instincto" guide for those disenchanted with modern diet, disheartened by Western medicine, and discovering a need for something more. He tells his own story of growing up in a white bread world, discovering discontentment, grappling with obsessive eating, and finally transitioning "back to instinct." Thoroughly based on personal experience, Zephyr's tale deals with his journey of transition through occasional pizzas and cooked food addiction to his now-permacultured roots in Pahoa, Hawaii. There are a few "interesting" chapters on instinctive meat and insect eating that may quease the faint of heart; but overall, the book is nicely constructed and Zephyr's no-nonsense "pleasure is the measure" attitude sprawls flagrantly across the page. Ripe persimmons sprout off lettuce leaf pages, and honey water drizzles down your gullet along with sweet morsels of thought. Zephyr answers all questions the prospective instincto might have, raises a few more, and instills within one and all a finer, tantric desire for fruit.
