Rosa Montero nació en Madrid y estudió Periodismo y Psicología mientras colaboraba con grupos de teatro independiente como Tábano y Canon. Ha publicado en diversos medios de comunicación (Pueblo, Hermano Lobo, Posible, Fotogramas, etcétera) y desde 1976 trabaja en exclusiva para El País. En 1980 ganó el Premio Nacional de Periodismo para Reportajes y Artículos Literarios. En el 2005 ha obtenido el Premio Rodríguez Santamaría de Periodismo en reconocimiento a los méritos de toda una vida profesional. Además de las novelas Crónica del desamor (1979), La función Delta (1981), Te trataré como a una reina (1983), Amado amo (1988), Temblor (1990), El nido de los sueños (1991), Bella y oscura (1993), La hija del caníbal (Premio Primavera 1997) y El corazón del tártaro (2001), también es autora de un libro de cuentos ¿Amantes y enemigos (Alfaguara, 1998)- y de varios vinculados con el periodismo: España para ti para siempre (1976), Cinco años de país (1982), La vida desnuda (1994), Historias de mujeres (Alfaguara, 1995), Entrevistas (1996), Pasiones (1999) y Estampas bostonianas y otros viajes (2002). La loca de la casa (Alfaguara, 2003) ha merecido el Premio Grinzane Cavour 2005 de literatura extranjera y el Premio Qué Leer 2003 al mejor libro en español, galardón que obtuvo de nuevo en el 2006 por Historia del Rey Transparente (Alfaguara, 2005).
