Insull, more than any other man, was responsible for founding the business of centralized electric supply; that he organized the Edison General Electric Company (predecessor of the industrial giant of the same name, sans Edison). Insull attained great wealth but his vast Midwest holding company empire collapsed in the 1930s and he died bankrupt.
