Editorial Reviews

Booknews
The success of insurrectionary movement in Cuba against the regime of Fulgencio Batista is not solely due to the actions of Fidel Castro's rebel army in the Sierra Maestra, according to the author, but can also be traced to the regional bases of support for the July 26 Revolutionary Movement (MR 26-7). Examining archival sources, oral histories and her own experiences in the events described in Mantanzas Province, far from the Sierra Maestra, she argues that the MR 26-7 functioned effectively at the grassroots level because it incorporated into the widely used methods of armed resistance those forms developed locally and often spontaneously in response to local conditions and daily concerns.
