Integrated Medical Sciences: The Essentials is a concise, accessible problem-based approach to the subject using case scenarios to facilitate students taking their pre-clinical or basic sciences examinations. Using a family of characters in each case scenario, the text reflects the current changes in medical and biomedical science teaching that is increasingly moving towards a more integrated approach through-problem-based learning. The characters, all members of an extended family, appear in several scenarios and the student becomes familiar with their personalities and their disease processes. Each scenario covers the relevant anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, immunology and biochemistry and enables the reader to grasp the key concepts of basic medical sciences in an integrated fashion.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"…an innovative book designed for students of all practitioners will find it a worthy resource as well." (Doody's Health Services)
From The Critics
Reviewer:Susan A Trombley, AAS, RRT(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description:In this book, the authors aim to present essential concepts of common medical diseases through case scenarios, covering the organ, hematological, and immune systems.
Purpose:The purpose is to present the essential concepts and facts of the basic medical sciences through case scenarios. The book stimulates critical thinking, recall, and creates an appreciation of interrelationships between the various specialties of biomedical science. With this unique approach, the authors have met their objectives.
Audience:According to the author, the book is written for preclinical U.K., U.S., and international medical students as well as physiology, biomedical sciences, pharmacy, advanced nurse practitioners and other health sciences students.
Features:Key features of this book are case scenarios involving a cast of characters with common diseases. The scenarios contain questions that require critical thinking, trigger boxes which show key facts, and tables. Other features include incomplete tables (which are completed by the reader) as well as learning tasks. Questions are prominent throughout the chapters and it is hoped the authors will consider adding an appendix with the answers in future editions.
Assessment:This is an innovative book designed for students of all disciplines, but medical and university libraries as well as healthcare practitioners would find it a worthy resource as well.
