This comprehensive resource examines how nursing theory and patterns of knowing affect nursing practice. In addition to the concepts of ethical knowledge, aesthetic knowledge, and empiric knowledge development, you'll learn about the newest pattern of knowing — emancipatory knowing. This pattern centers on the human capacity to create change by envisioning desired outcomes, particularly in situations that involve injustice or social wrongs. Throughout the book, helpful activities encourage you to reflect on important concepts and explore how evidence-based nursing theory can be used to improve the quality of care.

• A full-color insert visually demonstrates the fundamentals of knowing and includes the new concept of emancipatory knowing.
• Comprehensive discussions of nursing theory help you understand how theory development and nursing research apply to actual practice.
• Interpretive Summaries of selected conceptual frameworks highlight the essential features you need to know.

• A new chapter — Emancipatory Knowing: Knowing for Practice — emphasizes the importance of discovering what lies beneath issues and problems, redefining these issues and problems to reveal connections between complex social and political contexts, and then acting to address the underlying issues.
• Reflection and Discussion sections at the end of each chapter reinforce key concepts and encourage further discussion and reflective writing.
• The concept of using evidence-based practice to improve the quality of care is incorporated throughout, as well as how evidence-based practice contributes to theory development.
• Updated information on theory development incorporates the influence of emancipatory knowing and helps you connect theory and knowledge to your own experiences and everyday nursing practice.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description: This book sets out many different approaches and ways of thinking in the development of nursing theory and expands on earlier editions by introducing a new knowledge pattern called emancipatory knowing. New material on evidence-based practice and other trends relevant to the practice of nursing is also included. With this edition, the title has been changed from Integrated Knowledge Development in Nursing.
Purpose: The purpose of this edition is to examine how nursing theory and patterns of knowing affect nursing practice and to discuss a new pattern called emancipatory knowing.
Audience: "This book is written at a graduate student level and would be appropriate for academicians and practitioners with advanced degrees. The student resources make it potentially pertinent for baccalaureate students. "
Features: Chapter structure has been changed since earlier versions, with the nonempiric ways of knowing provided earlier, in chapters 3 to 6, followed by empirical knowing in chapters 7 to 10. Chapter 3 discusses the emancipatory pattern of knowing, detailing how it interrelates with the four fundamental patterns of knowing as identified by Carper. The former appendixes outlining the broad conceptual models and frameworks and middle-range theories have been moved to the Evolve website, ( Questions have been added at the end of each chapter to stimulate discussion. The glossary has been updated and student resources are available online as are web links relevant to nursing theory.
Assessment: As with earlier editions, the authors have worked to make the language more user friendly, eliminating words and phrases that are more typically reserved for the academician. The authors state that the inclusion of emancipatory knowing is in its beginning state, but it appears a very fitting addition to ways we learn and integrate knowledge. The authors also leave the field open to identifying further patterns of knowing in the future.

Plenty of abstract "thinking about thinking" esoteric awfulness.
