Library Journal
No Mac is an island, especially in an office. Working collaboratively-from simply sharing file servers, printers, and modems to sending complicated documents and E-mail-means connecting Macs to other computers. Maki, a network consultant, here provides a map to Mac networking in ten chapters. He assumes nothing on the part of his readers, so those familiar with the Macintosh operating system or networking may find some of the information unnecessary. The first three chapters deal with the basic Mac environment and simple transfer of information via diskette. Chapters 4 through 7 treat specific solutions for cross-platform computing, LANtastic, Novell, VINES, and Microsoft LAN Manager. The last three chapters examine the Mac as a cross-platform machine and troubleshooting on the network. Given rapid changes in hardware and software, much of the information already needs revising, so don't make your network decisions solely on Maki's suggestions; as a general source, this is just one place to start.
