As one of the major complications of obesity, the prevalence of sleep apnea is likely to increase in the coming years. Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), asthma, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and the pathophysiology of panic and related anxiety states also involve aspects of respiratory control. Integration in Respiratory Control: From Genes to Systems comprises the proceedings of the 10th Oxford Conference held at Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada, from the 19th to the 24th of September, 2006. This series of meetings was originally begun to bring physiologists and mathematicians together, in order to address critical issues in understanding the control of breathing. This volume includes the latest findings and developments at the genomic, cellular, and system levels that pertain to the physiology of cardio-respiratory control, including integrative physiology and modeling, central integration and neuromodulation, rhythm generation and plasticity, chemosensory transduction and signaling, pre- and post-natal development, and post-genomic perspectives.

Description: This excellent resource for researchers working in the area of respiratory control is full of original work presented at the 10th Oxford conference held in 2006 in Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. Editors Marc J. Poulin and Richard J. A. Wilson provide a nice foreword.
Purpose: This is a compendium of the proceedings of the conference, which is a forum for respiratory physiologists, clinicians, and affiliated research personal from around the world.
Audience: Researchers and clinicians in pulmonary and sleep medicine will find this book valuable, as will respiratory physiologists, students, and trainees in pulmonary diseases.
Features: The first three chapters are superb work dealing with historical and future directions in control of breathing. Dr. West's brief look into the history and J. S. Haldane's contribution is must reading and an outstanding beginning to the book. The papers on neural mechanisms of respiratory control and genetics of respiratory control are treasures for physiologists. Bedside clinicians will find the work overwhelming, but I am sure reading about respiratory control anomalies in diseases like Rett syndrome will be interesting topics for discussion.
Assessment: This is a good referral resource for researchers who are actively working in the field of respiratory control. The historical look and many basic papers delve into the hard work of respiratory physiologists trying to get below the surface to look at the very core of respiratory control.
