Overview

Digestive complaints have become increasingly common. Recent statistics show that gastrointestinal complaints account for nearly a third of all visits to primary care doctors and that nearly one in two Americans suffer from digestive disease. Coverage includes a diverse range of treatment methods, such as probiotics, meditation, massage, yoga, supplements, special diets, energy medicine, homeopathy, and acupuncture, as well as a special section devoted to mind-body medicine in digestive health and disease. In discussing unconventional treatments, the authors address many of the controversies that surround the remedies.

Audience: Anyone who provides care to patients with gastrointestinal complaints would benefit from reading this book. This includes primary care and specialty medical doctors, nurse practitioners, chiropractors, and naturopathic doctors, as well as students in these fields. Other health and alternative care professionals such as acupuncturists and dietitians may also gain insight.
Features: The book provides a generous overview of the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system. The chapters dedicated to the microbiome establish its relationship to the underpinnings of digestive disorders and the need to address it. A brief understanding of complementary modalities gives readers additional resources to use in a patient-centered and team approach to care. The graphs, illustrations, and tables are visually qualitative and enhance an understanding of the written material. Information is backed up by high level and/or well-established evidence.
Assessment: This book will find its way into my course as it provides an updated, evidence-based overview of the science and research behind many of the tools discussed in class. It will be referenced to address some of the controversial ideas that students find on the internet and through repeated hearsay. In promoting personalized care, this book recognizes the need to acknowledge the interconnected causative and contributory factors. At its best, the effective management of common diseases, which are frequently functional and chronic, uses several methodologies. This includes using lifestyle approaches that involve patients and promote their active participation in care. It may also call for the enrollment of multiple providers in a team approach. Understanding these different providerships and what they can offer is an important piece of integrative care. The book acknowledges its limitations: more research is needed, including algorithms and systematic plans. But I agree with the authors that, excitedly, there is so much more come.
