Overview

This daily digest of intellectual challenge and learning will arouse curiosity, refresh knowledge, expand horizons, and keep the mind sharp

Millions of Americans keep bedside books of prayer and meditative reflection—collections of daily passages to stimulate spiritual thought and advancement. The Intellectual Devotional is a secular version of the same—a collection of 365 short lessons that will inspire and invigorate the reader every day of the year. Each daily digest of wisdom is drawn from one of seven fields of knowledge: history, literature, philosophy, mathematics and science, religion, fine arts, and music.

Impress your friends by explaining Plato's Cave Allegory, pepper your cocktail party conversation with opera terms, and unlock the mystery of how batteries work. Daily readings range from important passages in literature to basic principles of physics, from pivotal events in history to images of famous paintings with accompanying analysis. The book's goal is to refresh knowledge we've forgotten, make new discoveries, and exercise modes of thinking that are ordinarily neglected once our school days are behind us. Offering an escape from the daily grind to contemplate higher things, The Intellectual Devotional is a great way to awaken in the morning or to revitalize one's mind before retiring in the evening.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
We all realize that we should know more and remember better. The Intellectual Devotional is designed as a secular version of the daily devotionals that are used for religious purposes. Like them, it contains 365 short lessons: in this case, daily supplements on history, literature, philosophy, mathematics, science, religion, fine arts, and music. Each one-page digest contains detailed information on a single topic; additional facts; and recommended readings.
Library Journal

If ever a book were meant for listening, this is it. Previously available from Macmillan only as a digital download, this 2006 national best seller by Kidder and Oppenheim (Intellectual Devotional: American History) is now available for the first time on CD. The 365 daily lessons span the seven fields of knowledge: history, literature, philosophy, mathematics and science, religion, fine arts, and music. Narrators Oliver Wyman (www.oliverwyman.com) and Helen Litchfield, who also read for the American History entry in this series, assist listeners' efforts at retention with well-enunciated, cogent, and steadily paced readings. Absolutely essential for libraries serving populations gravitating more to CDs than digital downloads. [Audio clip available through audible.com; the next recording in this series, The Intellectual Devotional: Modern Culture, will be available on CD from Macmillan and Sound Library next month, in retail and library editions, respectively.-Ed.]

Thought provoking, makes me want to learn more!

Before I purchased this book, I read reviews about how limited and "everyday" the knowledge in this book is. This is true to some extent, however, the book is a great primer or review of a wide array of subjects and themes. Reading this book does not endow one with great knowledge of the world, but it does remind you of things you once learned, and it makes me want to learn more about the topics, much more!

    Skip It

I was very intrigued by the concept of this book and picked it up during a quick trip into a B&N store for a giftcard. How I wish I would have taken a few minutes to thumb thru the pages. After the introduction paragraph on each page, the print is ridiculously small (and I am young!) Also, anyone with even an Associates in Gen Ed or Liberal Arts, let alone a bachelor's degree or higher should definitely skip this one. It's a refresher course of rudimentary, generally known facts on widely known topics. Not what I would consider 'cultured-class' material by any means.

    Great information in short bits

I read this book before bed every night. It has helped me learn a little bit about many different subjects. It is informative but short enough so I do not lose interest.

    Moderately Interesting

I like it -- with reservations. Some entries I find arguable. I agree with one review regarding the type size - it is very small-but still readable. It does make you think and that's a good thing.

This is a great book to refresh your memory on all the things we should know. Not something that could be used for a reference book but a memory jogger!

    A MARVELOUS WAY TO LEARN!

I bought one for myself and one as a birthday gift. Both copies are being much enjoyed. I was happy to see it in the NYTimes best-seller list (paperback/non-fiction).

A good read for those of us who lead an interrupted life

This book provides a summary of many varied topics ranging from classic literature, philosophy, religion, music, arts, history, and biographies etc... Each page represents a given day of the year with a different topic for each. It's perfect reading for those of us who just can't find enough uninterrupted time to read for more than 20-30 minutes at a time. For example, it¿s perfect for rail commuting, air flights, hiking and the occasional bathroom break. The content is interesting, concise and does broaden a person¿s knowledge. For example, there is a timely explanation on the origins of the Shiites and Sunni sects of the Muslim faith that I found interesting. The are just too many topics to include in this brief review. Overall I think it¿s a good book but could be improved with a better lay-out out in terms of organization of content, type-face and formatting. Other than that, I recommend this book for anybody seeking to broaden their knowledge.

    A Moment to Breathe

This book is relaxing, captivating and socially dynamic. It gives you a thought for the day and then helps to resurface it by giving links to the previous thought in later excerpts. It is definitely for those who are curious and for those who just like knowing information.

    Intellectually Stimulating!

The Intellectual Devotional is a book filled with interesting historical and artistic information. The book will take your mind on an adventure and stimulate your brain cells. However, the book falls short in that the information is not in-depth. But you could always google the topic for more information!

Answers to the questions you're afraid to ask

When a subject sounds familiar, but I don't know anything about it, I hesitate to ask questions about the basics. Perhaps I'm afraid of showing my ignorance, or at least I don't want to slow down the discussion. This book describes or explains the basics behind every major field of knowledge. And, it does this at the rate of one page per day. This is the kind of material that can nourish general knowledge. With its one-a-day format, it might even encourage a good conversation every day. I also have the habit of reading from a daily meditation book called 'Healing After Loss.' This earlier reading habit proved to me that concise daily readings help me to prepare for active participation in what each day has to offer. Daily readings open my mind to new ideas and improve my communications with other people.

    Read it. Get smarter.

This book is excellent. Serving as a compendium of virtually all the humanities and sciences, it's well-written and entertaining. Expect information on subjects ranging from Aristotle to Quantum Mechanics. An outstanding way to pass the time in an airport, on a trip, at a meal, or just sitting by the fire.

    Learn Something New Every Day!

I make time in the morning to read the Bible, now I make a little more time to read a section of this book! I am college educated and consider myself very well read but I am learning TONS of things I didn't know. Often I can't stop at the day I am supposed to read and I keep going. I hope the authors will continue with another volume!

    Concise and Incisive

It's the first thing I read every morning. Large concepts on varied topics boiled down to their one-page essence. Truly worthwhile, if you truly know how little you really know.

Become wiser in 5 minutes a day

The Intellectual Devotional will appeal to those readers who enjoy reading widely but may have little time. The Devotional provides a year's worth of short (but thoughtful and intriguing) readings for exercising one's brain. Organized in daily readings, the book features seven disciplines:history, literature, visual arts, science, music, philosophy and religion. Each day of the week is given one of the subjects--Monday is history, Tuesday literature and so on. Where else but in a book like the Intellectual Devotional could one find a short lesson about vaccines, Virginia Woolf, the categorical imperative, or Beethoven's Ninth Symphony all in one volume? It's like a tune-up for the brain. I can appreciate that, if one follows the yearlong plan, a reader could become more knowledgeable and enlightened.

    Very insightful

I was a little skeptical when i first picked up The Intellectual Devotional. This book expands your knowledge on 7 different topics for the week. Monday has a topic, Tuesday has a topic and so on. This book helps when you want to add to the conversation instead of listening and not understanding what is being said. I highly recommend this book if you want to broaden your horizons.
