Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is the latest volume in an annual collection of review presentations in critical care medicine.
Purpose: Summaries of selected lectures and reviews by participants in the 2010 International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine in Brussels are included.
Audience: Practitioners and senior trainees in critical care medicine are an appropriate audience for this work.
Features: The book's 55 presentations are not organized in the typical textbook manner, but rather highlight developments in various areas of critical care. For example, recent work in hemodynamic monitoring, resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, infectious disease, neurologic support, perioperative care, and management of end-of-life concerns are some of the topics. In general, each area has two to four papers which review recent developments. Papers are well written and make ample use of excellent line drawings and tables. Photographs and radiographs are infrequent. Chapters contain a reference list of 10 to 30 citations. For the most part, original work is cited dating to within one year of publication. The table of contents groups chapters by topic, while the detailed subject index provides adequate access to content.
Assessment: This is a worthwhile update for senior trainees or practitioners in intensive care medicine. This is an excellent and timely update due to timely publication less than one year after manuscript submission. Use of faculty from an international critical care conference supports overall strength of this work.
