Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is the latest in a series of critical care summaries targeting recent developments in the management of important problems with timely concise subject reviews.
Purpose: A wide range of review topics and organ specific critical care updates are organized to quickly inform the reader.
Audience: Senior trainees and practitioners will benefit from this work coming from an international group of authors.
Features: Topics in the 75 chapters range from genomics to therapies of sepsis, hemodynamic and respiratory support, and monitoring in perioperative care. Chapters also cover organ-specific topics, such as gut function and nutrition, endocrine management, new anticoagulant therapies, critical care aspects of malignancy, and anesthetic concerns. Reviews of select topics are also provided, including tumor lysis syndrome, drug dosing in the ICU, and management principles for pain and sedation agents. A typical chapter is 10-20 pages in length. The book makes ample use of multicolor figures and tables and occasional use of black-and-white illustrations. Each chapter has an excellent reference list with primary sources dating to within one year of publication. The table of contents divides chapters into groups while a subject index of approximately 10 pages ends the book.
Assessment: This 2009 update is the latest in an excellent series of reviews edited by Dr. Jean-Louis Vincent. Dr. Vincent effectively blends reviews of topics of interest to intensivists with updates reflecting recent work. The currency of references is far greater than a standard textbook. However, because this update is intended to emphasize recent or selected developments, it does not attain the breadth of a comprehensive textbook.
