Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is one in an ongoing series of critical care updates published annually.
Purpose: Selected reviews of "hot topics" in multidisciplinary critical care are presented.
Audience: Senior trainees in critical care and practitioners wishing to maintain currency with clinical and basic research in critical care medicine are an appropriate audience for this work. The editor, an international authority, has assembled a multinational group of authors and thought leaders to provide reviews of their recent work.
Features: Updates are provided in traditional critical care topics such as fluid resuscitation, hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, and ICU infections in the approximately 100 chapters. Timely basic science work regarding the impact of gender on critical illness, mechanisms of traumatic brain injury, and markers for infection also receive careful discussion. Individual presentations are clearly written with adequate use of tables and figures. Each presentation is accompanied by an ample reference list with citations of primary work dating to within one year of publication. While photographs and radiographs are not widely used, line drawings and tables reproduce with good quality. The table of contents lists chapters and authorship and groups presentations by type of content while a subject index of 10 pages provides adequate access to content.
Assessment: This book, one of three periodic resources to update critical care professionals, provides expanded discussion of important topics in the critical care literature from the previous 12 to 24 months. The Year Book of Critical Care Medicine (Elsevier) contains focused reviews of important papers from the primary critical care literature organized according to traditional topics. Springer also publishes smaller hardbound monographs with expanded discussions of specific critical care topics (Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine). The Intensive Care Medicine Annual Update can be recommended for expanded coverage of contemporary topics along with the biology of blast injury and the avian flu pandemic as well as a primer for hospital and ICU disaster preparation.
