Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is one of an annual series of books containing selected reviews on critical care topics.
Purpose: Updates in selected areas are included. Recent data affecting clinical practice and research is provided.
Audience: The fellow and teacher of critical care will enjoy this work. Authors are experts from North America and Western Europe. The editor is an international authority in multidisciplinary critical care and multiorgan dysfunction.
Features: The 1,000 page book is divided into 80 chapters. The content does not follow traditional categories but rather focuses on recent developments in the primary literature of critical care. Among subject areas discussed are recent developments in sepsis and coagulation, mechanical ventilation, monitoring (and the role of the pulmonary artery catheter), oxygen transport, emergency medicine, metabolic support, ethics and management advances. Chapters are approximately 10 pages in length and make ample use of tables and lists in data collection. Each essay includes a brief reference list of primary sources dating to within two years of publication. The table of contents provides chapter title, major subject group and authorship while a concluding subject index of 12 pages provides general access to topics.
Assessment: This book includes a tantalizing group of essays on topics pertinent to the evolution of critical care research and practice. The inquisitive intensivist will find a good read among the topics discussed.
