While I was beseeching Our Lord today...I began to think of the soul as if it were a castle made of a single diamond or of very clear crystal, in which there are many rooms, just as in Heaven there are many mansions.—St. Teresa of Avila
A masterpiece of spiritual literature, this sixteenth-century work was inspired by a mystical vision that came upon the revered St. Teresa of Avila, one of the most gifted and beloved religious figures in history. St. Teresa's vision was of a luminous crystal castle composed of seven chambers, or "mansions," each representing a different stage in the development of the soul.
In her most important and widely read book, St. Teresa describes how, upon entering the castle through prayer and meditation, the human spirit experiences humility, detachment, suffering, and, ultimately, self-knowledge, as it roams from room to room. As the soul progresses further toward the center of the castle, it comes closer to achieving ineffable and perfect peace, and, finally, a divine communion with God.
A set of rare and beautiful teachings for people of all faiths desirous of divine guidance, this meticulous modern translation by E. Allison Peers breathes contemporary life into a religious classic.

Meet the Author

TERESA OF ÁVILA (1515-82), also called St. Teresa of Jesus, was a Spanish nun and one of the great mystics and religious women of the Roman Catholic Church. She was the leader of the Carmelite Reform, which restored and emphasized the austerity and contemplative character of this religious order. Canonized in 1622, she was elevated to Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970, the first woman to be so honored. E. ALLISON PEERS is the translator of many great works of Spanish verse and mysticism.

    Interior Castle

There is no way that anything that St. Teresa of Avila wrote won't be of the highest caliber. The book itself is beautifully done and the painting on the cover, which is one of the most beautiful of the Saint, has no acknowledgment. I would love to know who painted it. But, what a value for this book. I had always wanted to read, and own a copy of Interior Castle, and I have it for a really good price. Thanks Barnes and Noble. Kevin McCombs

    Be Changed

This book should be read. It is one of my most favorite devotional classics. Read it slow, take your time. Open up and let it change your life

    Inspirational and life-changing

This is an important classic devotional book in which Saint Teresa of Avila, the doctor of the Church wrote about the inner journey of the soul towards the divine union. Please read this book slowly, meditate on her inspired words, and allow yourself be touched by God's Love and be changed.
