Meet the Author

The first woman Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church, Teresa de Ahumada y Cepeda was born in Avila, Spain, on March 28, 1515. A descendent of converses (Jews converted to Christianity) on her father's side, Teresa maintained an acute awareness of social injustices all her life. Teresa entered the Carmelite Monastery of the Incarnation in 1535, but it took over twenty years for her inner transformation. She went on to become a spiritual author, mystical theologian, contemplative teacher, and founder of the reformed, or discalced, Carmelites.

I am not a scholar so I must read this treasure slowly and meditate on a thought line quite awhile before I read more. It is wise to pray for help from the Holy Sirit each time the book is approached. At times(most) I feel the lesson in the words is just beyond my scope of understanding and I must stretch spiritually for it to touch me and pull me closer-deeper. I am glad for this struggle- this pulling in,tugging and coaxing the soul to open up and reach for the ability to see and understand Gods Will--I pray for the desire to seek that level.
