Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description: This is a test preparation book for those in their first postgraduate year (PGY-1) who are getting ready to take their final United States Medical Licensure Examination or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a number of representative cases characteristic of the type of cases one would see in the examination. Being familiar with many presentations is key to exam success, and this is a good additional study aid.
Audience: The audience is rather limited, just those preparing for either the USMLE or COMLEX as PGY-1 residents.
Features: The book presents 100 medicine cases with physiology or basic science explanations of the correct answers. The questions are presented in an easy-to-read format with full-color photographs where appropriate. The Correlations and Clinical Scenarios portion poses follow-up type questions about what happens in the ensuing hours or days, and this book has very good examples of how this portion works.
Assessment: This is a very good addition to the numerous study aids available, particularly with its focus on the follow-up.
