During my third year of medical school one of the residents introduced me to this series. He told me it was his secret to passing the shelf exams and really retaining the information. He let me borrow his copy for a week and told me he bet I would be buying my own copy by the end of the week. He was right.
The innovative case study style of this series is incredible easy to read through but helps go through the material in an incredibly thorough manner. Each case begins with a case description including the history and physical and then presents several questions for the case. You can think about the answers on your own for a bit before turning the pages for the answers. But rather than giving a few simple words for each question like so many review books, it gives an in-detailed description for each question and gives information beyond what they ask for.
I plan on continuing to use these books for review during my internship and residency.

Description: This USMLE preparation book is focused on the core competencies needed to successfully pass the examination. The format is one of case presentation, understanding what the question focuses on, and giving an analysis of the clinical problem. The previous was published in 2004.
Purpose: As a USMLE review, the book presents each case with the type of questions, e.g. what is the next step emphasized in the USMLE, in addition to the clinical information.
Audience: This is useful primarily for those preparing for the USMLE, but it could be equally useful for those studying for board certification who are having difficulty conquering the secondary type questions. The authors present the cases well.
Features: The presentation of the case and analysis followed by clinical information makes for an easy, fast read. There are some well chosen references and the index is quite useful.
Assessment: As USMLE books go, this presents the information well for easy study. It is one of the better preparation texts.
