Editorial Reviews

Sandy Whiteley
American book publishing is a relatively small industry, with revenues only 13 percent larger than the video-rental business, but it is of special interest to librarians. The first half of this encyclopedia has articles on U.S. publishing and some general topics such as "International Copyright" and" The Societal Context of Book Publishing". Special areas such as children's, feminist, reference, and university-press publishing are treated. "Education for Publishing", "The Paperback", and "Libraries and Publishers" are among other topics covered. The second half of the volume is arranged by regions of the world and contains articles on publishing in 26 countries, plus such survey articles as "Francophone Africa". These articles are not in any standard format but often touch on government relations, literacy, imports and exports, copyright, distribution, and authorship. Some of these entries have statistical tables In both parts of the book, the lengthy articles are signed, and many of the authors are well known in the field John Dessauer, Bernie Rath, John Tebbel, Nat Bodian. Most close with notes and/or a select bibliography. Statistical tables appear in such entries as "Book Marketing in the United States" and "Mergers and Acquisitions". Appendixes include tables of world book production, production by language, children's-book production, and school-textbook production for 197090. A detailed index concludes the book It's ironic that so little has been published in book form about book publishing. This fascinating overview of the industry will be of interest to librarians and other book people.
Booknews
A comprehensive international reference that surveys the book publishing industry through analytic essays by experts and scholars on publishing from the research community and practitioners who are involved in the various aspects of publishing. The first part deals with such broad topics as textbook publishing, copyright protection, new technologies, multinational publishers, scholarly publishing, scientific publishing, and publishing in the Third World. The second part surveys the industry in 29 regions and countries, and discusses how developments in the evolving economies of Eastern Europe, the EC, Southeast Asia, and other parts of the world have an impact on publishing worldwide.
