Overview

From ancient Greece to the present, the International Dictionary of Architects and Architecture presents a guided tour of 467 masterworks (including the Acropolis, Westminster Abbey, Burgos Cathedral, the Guggenheim Museum, Pushkino Palace and St. Peter's Basilica) and introduces readers to 523 Western architects, theorists and engineers as well as individuals involved in architectural decoration, landscape design and urban planning (Gustave Eiffel, Frank Lloyd Wright, Michelangelo, Le Corbusier and hundreds more).

In two richly illustrated volumes, the set contains 964 photographs and 169 floor plans of time-honored sites. Your patrons will be delighted to find many important structures and architects from areas of Eastern Europe that are difficult to find in most English-language reference books.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
First some impressive statistics: this two-volume, 1100-page dictionary weighs in at just over 13 pounds. It contains entries on 525 prominent architects, living and dead, and 464 buildings throughout the Western Hemisphere. Over 220 experts worldwide contributed to the research and writing. Volume 1 (organized alphabetically) provides vital biographical information and original critical essays on architects, engineers, and designers. Volume 2 (organized geographically) contains descriptions of individual buildings and sites. Entries are concisely written and carefully documented. Although there are some curious omissions (influential landscape architect Jens Jensen and American designer Raymond Loewy, to name just two), this dictionary should be considered an indispensable reference for every architectural library in the country.-- H. Ward Jandl, National Park Svc., Washington, D.C.
