Overview

First Published in 1999. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.

"The first major work of its kind to discuss international stock markets, this encyclopedia is essential for anyone interested in investing in today's global markets. Because of the increasing globalization of businesses, American investors can no longer limit themselves to information about the U.S. stock market. These two volumes define over 2,000 terms dealing with the history and practices of international stock markets in industrialized as well as developing countries, and discuss individuals, institutions (such as banks, brokerage and leveraged buyout firms), events, and slang terms relating to stock markets. The readable entries provide accurate, up-to-date information of interest to the burgeoning number of private and professional investors. This work is a valuable addition to school, public, and academic library collections."--"Outstanding reference sources 2000", American Libraries, May 2000. Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
At a time when it has become almost a clich to say that we live in a global economy, this new two-volume reference offers a comprehensive overview of global stock markets. It examines numerous countries (literally A to Z), looking at local stock exchanges and providing historical background of top-listed companies and their current market capitalization. Wall Street is also well represented, with excellent chronologies of many large and small brokerages as well as biographical information on famous movers and shakers, both past and present. This could have been a rather specialized directory, but the editors have included definitions of a wide range of financial and business terms in plain English. In addition, the inclusion of online discount brokers in the United States shows an attempt at being current. Unfortunately, there are a few lapses. The editors feature several large U.S. banks but fail to mention that some, notably Citicorp and BankAmerica, have been affected recently by larger mergers. There is no mention that Goldman Sachs, one of the largest U.S. investment banks, has contemplated going public. While good placement of photographs helps to illustrate various individuals and institutions, the book could have benefited from more charts or graphs to explain difficult financial concepts. Finally, the hefty price tag could dissuade many smaller libraries from acquiring this book, which would be a shame. Despite its faults, it has rich and varied content, helpful appendixes, and a thorough bibliography. Highly recommended for larger libraries with business collections.--Richard S. Drezen, Washington Post News Research Ctr., Washington, DC Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Booknews
This two-volume set offers definitions of some 2,000 terms relating to regional and world stock market practices that are in current use, and provides descriptions of the economies and stock exchanges of the world's most advanced countries. It also includes entries on individuals, institutions (banks, brokerages, leveraged buyout firms, etc.), events, and even the peculiar historic and contemporary slang. In light of the way exchanges are consolidating and reorganizing, it considers the stock market, whatever its residual regional variations, as a worldwide institution, its constituent parts having more in common with each other, country by country, than at any time in the past. The index is in Volume II. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
