Providing the researcher a global overview of the enfranchisement of women, the stated purpose of this volume is "to demonstrate the international dimensions of the demand for women's right to vote." Entries range from the Actresses' Franchise League to Clara Zetkin and include countries from all five continents, biographies of prominent figures, international organizations, and topics such as citizenship, sexuality, books, imagery, and advertising. International links between suffragists, organizations, and texts are emphasized. An introduction gives an overview of the suffrage movement from the late nineteenth century to the present. New interpretations of history and recent studies are highlighted as well. Readable, well-researched entries provide the reader with clear, concise information. The see-also cross-references and references listed at the end of each entry provide further data. Photographs and illustrations that enhance the text include a great shot in the entry for militancy of a smiling Flora Drummond being arrested in Hyde Park in 1914. An extensive bibliography, chronology, and excellent appendix of Web resources round out this book. Although many resources about women's suffrage focus on the United States and Britain, this work strives for world-wide coverage and succeeds admirably. The reader can find here not only Lucy Stone but also Duriyah Shafiq and Julieta Lanteri. Kuwait, India, and China are included as well. Great for browsing and serious research, this resource will be a valuable addition to libraries serving those in grades seven and above. Index. Illus. Photos. Biblio. Chronology. Appendix. 2000, ABC-CLIO, 380p. PLB $75. Ages 14 to Adult. Reviewer:Rachelle Bilz SOURCE: VOYA, August 2001 (Vol. 24, No. 3)
Library Journal
In approximately 230 entries, which range from suffragists, nations, and organizations to such headings as "friendship networks" and "drama, novels, poetry, and film," this volume seeks to embrace the entire suffragist movement. The text dates back to Mary Wollstonecraft. The entries themselves vary from one column (few entries are shorter) to several pages, making this a quick resource rather than a means of in-depth study on a particular topic. The authors, all British academics, seek "to shift the focus of attention away from the United States and Britain," but because they rely on only English-language sources, the entries favor English-speaking countries and Western institutions. Thus, Canada receives 14 columns of text, and China seven columns; Protestantism and Catholicism get entries, but Islam does not. The international scope comes from "a sample of countries from all five continents" and a few review essays, such as the entry "Africa South of the Sahara." Oddly, the United States entry lacks a chronology of state ratifications. Still, the information is accurate, and much of the material is not readily available elsewhere. The introduction is thoughtful and well written, and the resource is supplemented by a brief chronology of nation suffrage and a bibliography, including videocassettes and web sites. This reviewer could locate no comparable reference work. Recommended for all libraries.--Cynthia Harrison, George Washington Univ., Washington, DC Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
Booknews
Historians have long used Britain and the US as models in studying women's enfranchisement; this thorough and very readable reference seeks to shift the focus elsewhere in order to demonstrate the global nature of the demand for women's right to vote. Specific countries from all five continents were chosen either because they had an active suffrage movement or because they provide examples of particular circumstances under which women achieved the vote, such as a relationship between suffrage and nationalism, war, or decolonization. In addition to individual countries, entries include biographies of suffrage activists, terms (e.g., militancy, suffragette), national and international suffrage organizations, events, key suffrage texts, and concepts such as suffrage imagery.
