Reviewer: Grace M Auten, MD (Piedmont Infectious Diseases Consultants, PA)
Description: This encyclopedic book is a complete resource for travelers who want current information about health risks of international travel. Updated frequently since 1989, this book is the 13th edition.
Purpose: The authors' stated purpose is to provide travelers with a current, concise source of health information and advice by topic and by country, especially for developing countries. The goal is to give the reader a guide for prevention of health problems during travel, for management of chronic health problems internationally, and for treatment of conditions that occur during the trip. These objectives are worthy because the information in this book is not otherwise available in such a compact package.
Audience: The comprehensive coverage of travel health makes this a "must-have" for individual travelers as well as group travel planners. Physicians who provide travel clinics will find this book can aid them with counseling of patients. Companies with international offices and frequent travel should consider this book. Missionary groups will greatly benefit from this guide. The authors are well known for their accomplishments in tropical medicine, and their dedication to travel medicine education.
Features: Twenty-one chapters provide an overview of travel health, including topics such as vaccines for travel, travelers' diarrhea, malaria, business travel, and hepatitis. The detailed description of water purification is of great value for travelers to developing countries. A wide range of topics is presented, from prevention and management of altitude illness to dialysis overseas. Diabetes management across time zones is of value. Online resources are listed for even more current information. In addition, over 400 pages are devoted to individual countries, including entry requirements, embassies, hospitals, and disease risks.
Assessment: Readers attracted to the intriguing, colorful collage cover will not be disappointed in the book's fact-packed content. The topics are pertinent and well organized for both medical professionals and laypersons. The current references organized by chapter demonstrate the necessity for this 13th edition. Coupled with the online resources listed in Appendix C and personal consultation with a travel physician, this guide will enhance any traveler's international experience.
