Overview

Like the Internet itself, interest in computing (both local and distant) has grown exponentially. The rapidly changing role of the Internet has resulted in three very different editions of The Internet for Physicians. The first edition attempted to introduce the concept of information transfer and communication and point the way toward a tool of the future. The second edition attempted to assuage trepidation in the use of this emerging tool and suggest the why and wherefore of being connected. The needs that drove those goals have almost completely disappeared. As a result, the bulk of this edition is more focused on the medical aspect of the Internet and its use, and less on the nuts and bolts of connecting and communication through the Web. It has been revamped, reorganized, and expanded to include 30% more content and 90 new illustrations.
New to the third edition is an entire section dedicated to Medicine and the Web, with chapters discussing patient education and information, what your patients are seeing on the web, finding quality resources, including clinical-trial and evidence-based medicine sites, how to search and use Pun Med, telemedicine, continuing medical education, medical literature and informatics, applications of on-line journals and submissions, and much more.

Description: This is a worthy contribution to Internet collections provides current and valuable content to physicians and healthcare professionals seeking reliable Internet Web sites.
Purpose: The author's purpose is to "focus on the medical aspects of the Internet and its use." The book is worthy of its subject matter, and the objectives are met quite well.
Audience: The book is written for the medical student, resident, or practitioner. It is not targeted to any particular specialty, due to the fact that its content examines the Internet for all physicians. The author does not select any particular specialty, but he reviews a variety of medical Web sites. The author appears to have researched the subject matter well, and is a credible authority
Features: The author examines what pertinent medical information can be found on the Internet. He discusses how best to navigate the Web. He includes what equipment is available, and he recommends the search engines that are most efficient for physicians to use. The appendix entitled Health Related Internet Resources is particularly useful as a complete listing of medical Web sites that any practitioner or medical librarian will find valuable. However, this appendix possibly could become outdated quickly, thus requiring a 4th edition.
Assessment: Due to the ever changing nature of the Internet, the author is totally justified in writing a 3rd edition. I have required several books of this nature in the past, and this one is every bit as useful as any in the field. The is book is practical for use by the Internet novice as well as the seasoned Web surfer. I would recommend this book for personal purchase, and also as a valuable addition to the library collection.

This book gives a cursory overview of the history and current status of the Internet, electronic mail, newsgroups, using the Internet to access remote computers (Telnet and file transfer protocol), and searching the Internet. It also provides a broad overview of the entire field of medical informatics, a selected bibliography of books and articles, an extensive glossary of computer terminology, and an extensive annotated listing of health-related Internet resources listed by URL. It is intended to introduce physicians to the structure and content of the Internet and teach them how to obtain useful information. The audience includes all physicians. The introductory chapters are brief, and it is easy to get a working overview of the Internet in less than an hour. The annotated listing of World Wide Web sites is a rich source of medically useful content. Competing books include general audience texts such as The Whole Internet Catalog or Internet for Dummies. The Internet, particularly the Web, is rapidly becoming integrated into the practice of medicine. This text, although superficial and already partially dated, can be a quick introduction for the neophyte.
