Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Joy M. Hyzny, OTR/L(Univ of Illinois at Chicago Coll of Associated Health Professions)
Description: This book provides a basic introduction to the Internet, categories of Internet resources, overview and methods to access the World Wide Web, as well as available rehabilitation resources. An Internet quiz, references for Internet sources, and a glossary of terms are also included.
Purpose: Although the book does not specifically have a preface detailing the purpose, three main ideas for this book are outlined on the cover. The authors and publisher intend this book to be a guide to learn about and access the Internet. Because rehabilitation professionals by necessity must be aware of the latest health products, agencies, etc., this book meets a demand within the medical community.
Audience: This book specifically pertains to rehabilitation professionals, students in allied health, rehabilitation faculty, and residents/physicians. Resources listed in the book include many disability and health-related issues involving various specialties within medicine. Drs. Reed and Cunningham teach occupational therapy at major universities.
Features: Appropriate illustrations allow the reader to conceptualize processes. Although there are many available references for computer-based applications, the authors provide a sample of references. Overall, the appearance of the book is quite professional in content, outline, and design. The book includes a floppy disk compatible with Microsoft Windows or Macintosh, which allows the reader to easily locate resources.
Assessment: Given the extensive use of computers and the desire for professional networking, this book is a valuable tool and resource with which rehabilitation professionals can learn about and explore the Internet. Materials presented throughout the book are introduced in a user-friendly and professional manner that enables the reader to comprehend necessary concepts.
