Overview

"There is usually a fine line between genius and insanity, but in this case it has become very blurred. Some of the funniest and most clever writing I have read in years." (Terrance Fielding, WIRED magazine)

"I laughed so hard and uncontrollably I could hardly breathe. Reading this on public transport is not a good idea." (Penthouse magazine)

"Brilliantly funny." (Jezebel.com)

From the notorious Internet troublemaker who brought the world the explosively popular "Next Time I'll Spend the Money on Drugs Instead", in which he attempted to pay his chiropractor with a picture he drew of a spider; "Please Design a Logo for Me. With Pie Charts. For Free," which has been described as one of the most passed-on viral e-mails of all time; and, most recently, the staggeringly popular "Missing Missy", which has appeared everywhere from The Guardian to Jezebel to Andrew Sullivan's The Daily Dish, comes this profoundly funny collection of irreverent Internet mischief and comedy.

Featuring all of Thorne's viral success, including "Missing Missy", The Internet Is a Playground culls together every article and e- mail from Thorne's wildly popular website 27bslash6.com, as well as enough new material, available only in these pages, to keep you laughing-and, indeed, crying-until Thorne's next stroke-of-genius prank. Or hilarious hoax. Or well-publicized almost-stint in jail (really).

    Fun but...

First off, I love the work this man produces. There is some debate as to whether the interactions in this book are true or not but, having been on the Internet for more that 10 minutes, it seems rather likely that they are faithful representations of online interactions. Besides that, it's just a hilarious read. Unforunately, the Nook version is more expensive than the hard copy version but that seems to have been out of the author's hands. The only complaint I have is that much if the content in the book has already been featured on the author's website. There are new sections, of course, but not as many as I expected/hoped. I am happy that articles that were removed from the website for various (legal) reasons were included in this edition. I feel like a secret agent entrusted with documents that can alter the face of mankind forever. If I were a secret agent my codename would be Agent Fade because I would be so secret and stealthy that it would seem like I just faded into the background until I got the word from mission control to launch the offensive. If you are comming to this author for the first time this is definitely a great read. Older fans may be sadpandas by the older content but will be happy to have them as keepsakes until the crazy Australian censorship has the articles taken down.

    David Throne Is A Genius

This book is hilariously brilliant. I love everything in it and it is a great addition to my day. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a laugh.

So funny, you won't be able to breathe

We've all seen it in our email, forwarded to us by a friend or co-worker. The email string is about a man who is trying to pay for a chiropractor's bill with a drawing of a spider. Then there's the Missing Missy lost cat poster. I'm always wary of the "this really happened" tag that comes along with these sorts of emails.

But these, my friends, are real. And so is David Thorne, the perpetrator. Thorne is a native of Australia with a wicked sense of humor, which you can bear witness to via his blog, 27b/6.

The Internet is a Playground is a hysterical collection of actual emails conversations between Thorne and some poor sap (his co-workers must hate getting emails from him), complaints he gets from blog visitors and other hilarious things that will make your sides ache.

From the very first moment I picked up this book and started reading it, I was laughing. Out loud, and uncontrollably. I read it to Hubby on the car ride home the day it came in the mail, and he was laughing so hard, we almost got into an accident. Later that night, I read Hubby the email string between Thorne and his kid's teacher. I was laughing so hard I was crying and I couldn't get the words out. And it was that obnoxious sort of laugh that makes you talk like you've just sucked down a bunch of helium balloons.

I need to meet this guy. For real. I think he's my new hero.

When I finished the book, I had to share it with someone, and since I'm not the kind of person to go up to a random stranger and hand over a book, I gave it to my mom to read when while we waited in the airport on the way to San Fran.

She started laughing as soon as she opened it, quickly becoming my entertainment for our five-hour layover. I watched as her face contorted, eyes squinted, and then the held back laughter exploded. Seeing her react that way only sent me into fits of laughter as I remembered a string of emails from the book.

Of course, we were getting weird looks as passengers scooted to the farthest reaches of the terminal, but that only made the whole thing funnier. And you know what? I was totally okay with it.

This book instantly became one of my favorites with its laugh-out-loud-okay-to-cry humor. Read it.

    READ it.

    READ IT!!!

Seriously, though. Just read it. You won't be sorry.

    Lots of new material.

At 368 pages, this is a pretty big book and contains a lot of material by David Thorne that I have not seen on his website. I have to admit to being a bit of a fan of Thorne's website and thought this would just be more of the same but there is enough new stuff to make it worth every cent and I laughed a lot while reading it.

    Funniest book ever!

I just received a galley copy in the mail this morning and I didn't get any work done today because I couldn't put it down. I have never laughed so much in my life and I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed.

    Hilariously Brilliant!

I received a galley version of this book and at first thought "hmm, could be funny" but just two minutes into it I was laughing hysterically and actually cried. This is, without a doubt, the funniest book I have read in my life. Highly recommended.
