Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mary A. Curran, RN, PhD (University of North Carolina-Charlotte)
Description: The authors state that this guide "provides background information about the Internet, its services, and resources to benefit healthcare professionals and students." With this pocket-sized volume and the accompanying diskette, the authors provide two approaches for accessing Internet resources.
Purpose: The stated purpose is to provide the knowledge and confidence readers need to effectively use Internet resources. The authors accomplish these aims by providing seven chapters, three appendixes, a glossary, and an index.
Audience: The intended audience is nurses, healthcare professionals, and students.
Features: Much of the content is as one might expect. There is a nice overview: web sites for nurses and health professionals (listservs, government agencies, online journals, etc.); and Internet services and resources (email, file transfer, news groups, browsers, etc.). There are, however, content areas that make the volume unique. This unique content includes frequently asked questions (FAQs) that speak to various world wide web concerns; exercises to practice interact exploration; and brief advice on how to begin one's own web site.
Assessment: A computer diskette is included that adds little value. Content is a single Web page with lists of alphabetized links without any additional definitions or explanations. There are other books with similar content to consider; however, if the price is right, this one is worth buying because of its compact format, diverse content, and helpful information.
