Library Journal - Library Journal
"This book is intended to provide the searcher with an understanding of the principles of online searching and detailed knowledge of the current tools for Internet information retrieval." So it begins with an introduction to the basics of online searching, including Boolean logic and proximity and adjacency searching, and discusses how these principles can be applied in searching the Internet. Potential real-life scenarios of how the Internet can be used as a research aid to answer reference questions are provided. The book then examines specific Internet search tools and resources, virtual libraries, and Internet directories. As the authors wisely point out, Internet tools and resources can quickly become outdated. Thus the authors have developed an "Internet Searching Center," a web site of pointers to all the tools and resources discussed in the book, which can be updated and enhanced as needed. Because of the "Internet Searching Center," and the generally unvarying basic principles of online searching, this is one computer book whose information will long outlive that of other computer books. This can be attributed to the background and experience of the authors. Their credits range from editing The Internet Compendium (LJ 12/95), to library school professor and research scientist.
