Overview

Internet websites have opened opportunities for teachers and students alike. This work contains a comprehensive list of informative websites providing information on each of the 50 states.

For each state from Alabama to Wyoming, plus the District of Columbia, sites of particular use to teachers, students and librarians are listed. An appendix lists 50 websites useful for all states. Taken together, the topics covered by these websites - including history, natural resources, science, art, education, and more - give a complete picture of life in a particular state. Official governmental sites for each state are also included.

Each entry offers a concise description of site parameters geared to the needs of educators. Special features of each website are noted, and the authors suggest curriculum areas in which the site's information will be especially useful.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This guide to over 2500 web sites-about 50 for each U.S. state-will benefit students and educators seeking curriculum-related information. Taken together, the sites aim to provide "a full picture of the life of each state." Listed alphabetically by sponsor or topic within each state, the entries provide site content description, its special features, and relevant curriculum topics. Since these are sites of state or local governments and agencies, universities, and both public and private institutions, they cover a wide range of topics. For instance, the Georgia O'Keefe Museum site appears under New Mexico, while a site for Civil War music appears under South Carolina. Unfortunately, though Smallwood (Free or Low Cost Health Information: Sources for Printed Materials on 512 Topics) and her coauthors seem to have selected sites suitable for pre-kindergarten through college-level studies, appropriate educational levels are not indicated. Users may find the extensive index a bit frustrating to browse. The value of indexing very broad topics (e.g. environmental studies, history, and social studies) is questionable, as several hundred citation numbers are listed under each. Bottom Line The arrangement of this resource assumes that users often approach a topic based on web sites originating in a specific state. If this is what your library needs, you should consider purchasing this book despite its drawbacks.-Stanley P. Hodge, formerly with Ball State Univ. Lib., Muncie, IN Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
