Overview

Now in its Third Edition, this practical guide successfully meets the needs of pulmonary physicians, respiratory therapists, and nurses. Filled with tables, graphs, and illustrative cases, the book helps readers fully understand the clinical utility of pulmonary function tests.

This edition includes new information on the forced oscillation technique for measuring respiratory system resistance. Also included is a discussion of measurement of exhaled nitric oxide, which is becoming useful in the study of asthma. Other highlights include nearly fifty new illustrative cases and current American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society Task Force guidelines on standardization of pulmonary function testing and interpretation.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT (William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description: This third edition continues the tradition of its predecessors as a highly respected clinical reference for pulmonary function tests. It updates the 2003 edition.
Purpose: According to the authors, the sole purpose is to make pulmonary function testing user-friendly. As the book covers the basics of pulmonary function testing and does so in an easy-to-read format, the authors meet their stated objective.
Audience: Although not specifically stated, this guide is written for healthcare practitioners who already possess a basic understanding of lung physiology, spirometry, and arterial blood gases. Given the concise yet thorough coverage of each topic, the authors are unquestionably experts.
Features: The book begins with a list of commonly used pulmonary function abbreviations and then segues to the individual chapters. The basics are well covered and each chapter begins with a descriptive paragraph regarding the chapter's content and ends with a list of references. Graphs and tables are sprinkled throughout. The last chapter contains 45 illustrative cases. The book ends with an appendix of equations to predict FVC/various flows and a detailed index.
Assessment: This is an excellent clinical guide for physicians, respiratory therapists, or nurses who perform spirometry. This third edition also details the forced oscillation technique, exhaled nitric oxide measurements, and the 2005 ATS/ERS guidelines on pulmonary function and interpretation. Not only is this an excellent resource in the clinical arena, but it would be an excellent book for residents and medical and respiratory students. Respiratory therapists who are preparing for the certified pulmonary function technologist credential will find this a valuable study guide as well.
