Description: This is a comprehensive guide to the performance of image-guided breast interventions.
Purpose: The book outlines the current practice of detecting and diagnosing early stage breast cancer. These are worthy objectives for a modern imaging department.
Audience: Though not specifically stated, the target audience seems to be radiologists early in practice or perhaps more experienced radiologists who are trying to establish a comprehensive breast imaging practice, but are not subspecialty trained breast imagers. It also would be a good reference for breast imaging fellows, though it is beyond the level of most radiology residents.
Features: In this complete review of all forms of image-guided breast interventions, there are examples and excellent illustrations and photographs of essentially all the different vendors and types of equipment used in percutaneous interventional procedures for breast lesions. The book is very pragmatically oriented, with checklists detailing each step of the procedures and helpful tips and tricks. As much as is possible in a book, it simulates the experience of having the direct supervision of a more seasoned radiologist colleague, guiding readers through each procedure and helping them establish a breast imaging practice. The authors even include suggestions for patient preparation. The chapters dealing with pathology are also unusually complete, not only reviewing expected pathologic findings, but also emphasizing the role of the radiologist on the team of breast cancer specialists, including the necessity of excellent radiologic pathologic correlation and what information breast surgeons and other breast care specialists require from the radiologist. Also, although this is familiar territory to breast imagers, the fundamentals of the BIRADS lexicon and reporting requirements are included, which gives the book greater appeal to generalists. It includes guidelines from not only the American College of Radiology, but also the European Guidelines for Quality Assurance of Mammography Screening and the German National S3 guidelines for the Early Detection of Breast Cancer.
Assessment: Overall, this is a high quality book. Its thoroughness and attention to detail are its greatest strengths. One could find the answer to virtually any question about breast imaging interventional procedures somewhere in this book.
