Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Joshua D Rittenberg, MD (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago)
Description: This is the most complete book available for interventional spine physicians. The organization of chapters by technique and by pathological condition makes navigation by topic easily accomplished. An internationally recognized all-star lineup of authorities in the world of interventional spine care has been assembled to create this book.
Purpose: The editors' hope is that this book will provide readers with a stepwise approach to a variety of spinal conditions. They point out that some of the algorithms are those of the author rather than universally accepted. The objectives are worthy ones, given the general lack of scientifically based references in this relatively new field. By creating a comprehensive reference that addresses both common and uncommon spinal pathological conditions, the objectives have been met.
Audience: The target audience includes any practitioner involved in the care of patients with spinal conditions. This includes medical students, residents, physiatrists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and neurosurgeons, as well as chiropractors and physical therapists looking for a broader understanding of available treatments.
Features: The book covers technical aspects of interventional spine care, in addition to key conceptual points and the core basic science necessary to understand spinal pathology and treatment. This includes discussion of the neurobiology of pain and pathophysiology of various clinical conditions. The physical exam, along with the workup of spinal pathology, including imaging, electrodiagnostic studies, and diagnostic blocks are described. The full scope of interventional spine procedures is covered in detail. In each section devoted to specific pathological conditions, an algorithmic figure is provided that outlines a stepwise approach to each diagnosis. A DVD with an image library is included with the book.
Assessment: This is a high quality book, and a required addition to the library of any clinician practicing interventional spine care. It is significantly more comprehensive than any other available book in this field.
